Hyperplastic rhinitis: causes, symptoms and treatment

Hyperplastic rhinitis is a fairly common disease, which among otolaryngologists is usually referred to as a group of protracted, chronic rhinitis. It should be noted that the diagnostic process in this case is quite complicated, because the main symptoms resemble a common cold. So what is the specificity of this ailment and what methods of treatment are considered the most effective?

Hyperplastic rhinitis: what is it? Signs, features and causes

Rhinitis is hyperplastic - this is a form of inflammation that is accompanied by proliferation of connective tissue in the nasal passages. Consequently, patients have difficulty breathing and some other problems.

As a rule, adults suffer from the ailment, this rhinitis is more rarely diagnosed in children. Symptoms and treatment are certainly interesting moments, but to begin with it is worth studying the main causes of the appearance of the disease.

Despite the fact that the disease is known for hundreds of years, the exact mechanism of development has not been sufficiently studied. Nevertheless, it was noted that the proliferation of connective tissue is much more often diagnosed in patients with curvature of the nasal septum. Potential reasons include other problems:

  • Chronic sinusitis;
  • Allergic diseases, which are accompanied by irritation and swelling of the mucous membranes of the nose;
  • Diseases of the lymphatic system;
  • Decreased activity of the immune system;
  • Frequent infections of the respiratory tract;
  • Inadequate treatment of diseases of the nasopharynx and upper respiratory tract;
  • Work or living next to harmful industrial enterprises;
  • smoking;
  • Hereditary predisposition.

Hyperplastic rhinitis: symptoms

At the initial stages, the ailment is accompanied by the usual symptoms, including nasal congestion and the appearance of mucous secretions. But as the development of hyperplastic rhinitis greatly complicates nasal breathing and often becomes the cause of its complete absence. Because of this, patients complain of dry mouth and partial (sometimes complete) loss of smell. Snoring appears. The feeling of nasal congestion does not disappear even if the nasal passages are clean.

Hyperplastic rhinitis is accompanied by other symptoms, including:

  • Sensation of a foreign body in the nose;
  • Deterioration of appetite;
  • Unpleasant, sometimes even painful sensations when swallowing;
  • Aching headaches;
  • Frequent bleeding from the nose;
  • Hearing impairment;
  • The presence of thick mucous discharge from the nose, often with impurities of pus.

Because of the proliferation of connective tissues and problems with nasal breathing, the mucous membrane does not receive enough oxygen. Quite often an inflammatory process develops, which proceeds undulating, then fades, then progresses, and the appearance of purulent, dense excretions in this disease is not considered a rarity. With zalozhennostyu not help to cope even vasoconstrictive drops. Increased risk of serious bacterial infections.

Diagnosis of the disease

Of course, to begin with, the doctor should familiarize himself with the patient's complaints, and also conduct a physical examination. Hyperplastic rhinitis is accompanied by swelling of the nasal concha, pallor of the nasal membranes and drooping of the ends of the nasal concha in the nasopharynx. On the mucous membrane often appear patches of atypical brown or gray color.

Naturally, further studies are carried out, including a general blood test and an endoscopic test. The patient also takes a swab from the nose to determine bacterial infections. Diagnostic methods include radiography and diaphanoscopy. The nasal passages are also examined after using vasoconstrictive drops to determine their effectiveness.

How is hyperplastic rhinitis treated?

Treatment depends on the characteristics of the course of the disease, as well as its possible causes. For example, a person is strongly advised to quit smoking or change their place of work if it is a question of harmful chemical production.

For the treatment of vasoconstrictive drugs, in particular, "Ximelin", "Otrivin", "Nazivin". Often, patients are prescribed glucocorticosteroids, for example, "Avamis". Sometimes a mixture of glycerin, glucose and corticosteroids is injected into the nasal passages. Effective is the massage of the nasal lining using "Protargol" and "Splenin".

With regard to the removal of excess masses of connective tissue, in modern medicine, chemical moxibustion (for example, trichloroacetic acid), laser therapy, cryotherapy and some other methods are used. In severe cases, a conchotomy is performed - a surgical procedure, during which the doctor removes tissue with a medical scissors.

Possible complications of the disease

In the absence of adequate therapy or attempts to cure the ailment, complications can develop independently, including the appearance of chronic nasal bleeding, the development of a protracted inflammatory process, the absence of nasal breathing and loss of smell.

Unfortunately, complications often extend to other organs. Hyperplastic rhinitis can lead to loss of hearing, the appearance of chronic headaches and pain in the jaw area. Complications include bronchitis, sinusitis, adenoiditis, sinusitis, as well as frequent conjunctivitis. Some patients develop heart failure, liver and kidney problems, general deterioration of well-being and decrease in working capacity.

That is why it is so important to discover the disease in time and begin therapy, especially if the hyperplastic rhinitis in children is diagnosed. Symptoms and treatment in this case are practically the same as in adult patients, but a growing body with a nasal breathing disorder can cause serious damage.
