How to install the chimney

Modern chimneys are complex engineering structures, on which not only the efficiency of the boiler, the furnace, the fireplace, the amount of fuel depends, but also the safety of the functioning of the entire system as a whole. Proper selection and installation will not allow reverse traction, smoke or fire. Therefore, the selection of material and components, as well as the very process of installing a smoke-exhaust system should be taken seriously. It is better to apply for competent advice to the appropriate specialists.

Shape, sizes and types

Chimney is a kind of vertical channel, which is necessary for the formation of thrust and the release of household gases into the atmosphere. Its section can be round, oval or square. The most common form is cylindrical. Such a demand is due to the fact that there are no corners in it, which are some kind of barrier to the passage of smoke and burning, leading to the formation of soot and its settling on the walls. The circular section of the pipe ensures a quick and practically unobstructed discharge of smoke upward.

The diameter of the chimney pipe is determined on the basis of information from the operating instructions of the heating system. The specialist can also do this by calculating the ratio of the boiler output, the height of the structure and the surrounding buildings, especially if these structures are much higher than the building where the chimney and the entire heating system are planned to be installed.

Chimneys are made of various materials that determine their appearance. Here are some of them:

1. Plastic.

2. Ceramic.

3. Brick asbestos cement.

4. Refractory clay.

5. Steel.

Characteristics

Before installing the chimney pipe , it must be done so that it functions correctly, that is, it provides the necessary traction, was provided with good thermal insulation, had no difficulty in operation, met all the requirements of fire safety, was durable and, importantly, had a fairly attractive And aesthetic appearance.

The chimney has the following qualities and characteristics:

- Excellent aerodynamic properties that ensure the correct movement of air along with the products of combustion.

- Ideally smooth inner surface. Due to this, the deposition of a plaque on the walls is minimized, therefore, it will be necessary to clean the structure less often.

- Proper opposition to the negative effects of condensation and aggressive acids.

- High anti-corrosion properties.

Installation of a chimney from a brick

Traditionally, the installation of the chimney is made of bricks. But with modern fuel - gas or fuel oil, and with transitional regimes of heating systems, a brick chimney undergoes permanent destruction. They are associated with the formation of condensate, leading to the emergence of microscopic cracks, which let moisture into the living quarters. The average lifetime of such an installation is about 7 years. A more durable brick chimney - with an inner tube of refractory clay, in another way it is called chamotte. It is most resistant to fluctuations in temperature conditions.

Mounting features:

- It is impossible to remove more than 2 furnaces into the chimney.

- The distance from the grate to the mouth of the pipe should be more than 5 meters.

- Do not use ventilation ducts under the chimney unit.

- Equipped valves should have a hole of at least 1.5 * 1.5 cm.

- It is better to spread the chimney with the following dimensions: 14 * 14 cm (for an oven with a power not exceeding 3.5 kW), 14 * 20 cm, 14 * 27 cm (for a furnace with a power of 5.2 kW).

- If the external walls are made of non-combustible materials, then it is possible to arrange a chimney inside them.

For a small oven, the masonry is made in 4 bricks, and for more powerful installations it is 5-6.

We install ceramic chimney

Ceramics is used to make chimneys from time immemorial, but modern chamotte installations are not at all similar to refractory clay pipes of past years. The thickness of the current ceramic units is no more than 1.5-2 cm. Accordingly, this leads to a reduction in the weight of the entire structure, and the installation of a chimney from individual modules has become a simpler process.

The ceramic units have high heat resistance and resistance to corrosive environments and the effects of condensation. Despite the fact that they quickly warm up, the chimneys are very fire resistant. They are capable of up to 1.5 hours to withstand direct ignition.

Ceramic pipes can be found in insulated chimneys with an outer contour made of concrete, stainless steel or expanded clay. Such systems of ceramics are modular, therefore it is not difficult to perform the installation of a chimney with your own hands, the main thing is to observe the necessary norms and rules.

Mounting features:

- The installation must start from the bottom of the chimney, moving upwards.

- A special module with a drain for condensate is placed on the prepared base on top of the cement slurry.

- Next, a connecting ceramic tee is installed, then straight elements. Everything is treated with an acid-resistant solution.

- Joints of modules should not be connected with slabs. All seams need to be smeared with a sponge and remove excess mix.

- It is better to attach the ceramic pipes with a yoke every 1.5 m.

Work with plastic products

Chimneys made of plastic have a low weight and low price. They are resistant to corrosion, have a flexible shape and are easy to install. But their use is very limited. So, they can be used in systems where the temperature in condensing boilers reaches only 120 degrees. The installation technique is as follows:

- Pipes are cut according to the pre-prepared dimensions.

- With the help of the coupling sleeves, the sections of the structure are interconnected.

Despite the fact that this method of installation is the simplest of all, in the construction sector it is not very much in demand. Therefore, the choice of parts and components is very limited.

Differences in the installation of single- and double-circuit chimneys

Before installing chimneys made of stainless steel, it is important to familiarize yourself with their types. Chimneys are one- and two-circuit insulated. The first used indoors, the thickness of the walls should be no less than 0.5 mm and withstand the temperature to 500 degrees. In the lower part of such structures, special devices for assembling condensate are installed during the installation. They can be used in rooms equipped with any heating systems. Also, the installation of gas chimneys for boilers and other units with a temperature of gases not exceeding 500 degrees Celsius.

Two-circuit chimneys ("sandwich") are used both outside and inside the premises. They have in their composition an external and internal contour, between them there is a heater, for example, ceramic fiber or basalt wool. The heater must withstand a temperature of up to 500 degrees, without losing its protective properties and not emitting harmful toxic substances, have low thermal conductivity. The thickness of the protective layer depends on the climatic conditions and ranges from 30 to 100 mm. You can make installation of the chimney ("sandwich") with your own hands. To do this, you need to connect all the elements of the structure in the correct sequence, taking into account all the features that we will consider below.

Requirements for structures when installing them

The market of heating equipment includes a wide selection of boilers, stoves, fireplaces, for which not only traditional solid fuel is used. Often there are oil and gas units. The installation of such equipment requires certain requirements. Consider the conditions under which the installation of a stainless steel chimney or any other:

1. The chimney must completely remove the combustion products.

2. Each chimney or furnace requires its own chimney.

3. The cross-sectional area of the pipe must correspond to the section of the smoke outlet of the heating device.

4. Smoke pipes must be made of special steel with increased resistance to corrosion.

5. Smoke channels should be made as direct as possible. They should consist of no more than 3 turns. And the radius of their rounding should be greater than the radius of the pipe itself.

6. The height of the chimney should not be more than 5 meters. This height will provide the necessary resolution and traction.

The importance of the process

Installation of heating units, especially in the case when installing chimneys made of stainless steel, you need to pay special attention, because it depends on the effective operation of all equipment in general.

The installation of the chimney system should be carried out by qualified workers, as they will perform their work taking into account all the rules and requirements for fire safety, set out in regulatory documents. They also take into account the recommendations of the manufacturers of single-walled and double-walled chimneys.

General rules for installing a chimney

Installation of heating units, especially in the case when installing chimneys made of stainless steel, you need to pay special attention, because it depends on the effective operation of all equipment in general.

Conditions to be observed when installing the chimney

Installation of the chimney pipe, produced by yourself, requires the implementation of certain rules:

- The chimney should rise above the flat roof by at least 500 mm.

- The pipe should be placed at a distance of 1.5 to 3 meters from the ridge or parapet.

The chimney elements must be mounted on the bottom of the heating unit. For better connection, it is desirable to use a sealant with an operating temperature of 1000 degrees Celsius.

Place the joints of pipes to be sealed with special clamps. The joining of the parts of the chimney duct must exclude any possibility of deflection. Also, the chimneys must not come in contact with the electrical wiring, gas piping and other communications.

Conclusion

To the chimney worked well, you need not only to install it correctly. For such a channel it is necessary to take care of, clean it before each heating season. It is desirable that the cleaning work performed by qualified workers who know their business. They will ensure the correct functioning of the installation and the safety of living in the house.
