How to grow grapes: propagation with green cuttings

Grapes are a valuable culture that many summer residents dream of having in their garden plot. Its berries are very tasty. But, in addition to direct use in food, there are many more ways to use ripe berries. They make wine, juices, compotes and much more. Recently, as a result of the constant work of selection scientists, many varieties of varieties have been bred. Among them there are also those that have large fragrant berries, and valuable technical varieties, and those that have particular resistance to the underlying diseases of grapes. However, their cost is quite high. Therefore, having acquired one precious copy and having made sure of its excellent qualities, the owners begin to think about how to get a lot of bushes that will bring the same delicious grapes. Reproduction by green cuttings in this case is one of the most convenient and common methods. Landing in the ground of ready-made seedlings does not usually cause any special difficulties. But to get them yourself from an already growing bush is not easy.

When to cut?

In principle, the reproduction of grapes with green cuttings can be performed almost at any time of the year. But to achieve the optimal result, it is advised to prepare the material in May-June, just a couple of weeks before flowering. Young shoots should by this time gain enough strength for the subsequent independent life. The most important thing in preparing the future planting material is to prevent even the slightest drying to get a viable grapes. Reproduction by green cuttings should therefore be started at high humidity, namely in cloudy weather in the early morning or evening.

How to choose the material?

For propagation, the stepson, young shoots of bushes, as well as the upper parts of the branches, are suitable. Usually choose a part that contains 3-4 developed kidneys, capable of giving in the future quality grapes. Reproduction by green cuttings begins with the preparation of green material. The trimmed branch should be shortened from above, just above the ocellus, and trimmed below 3-4 centimeters after the kidney. Very important for the subsequent rooting are the living green leaves. If the prospective kidney is on shoot 3, leave the 2 upper leaves. If there are less of them, you need to leave one sheet, so that later it will grow strong and strong grapes.

How to root?

Reproduction by green cuttings requires the preparation of a sufficiently large container (for example, a trimmed container from under water with a volume of 5 liters). It must be filled with an earth mixture in which half will be garden soil, and the second half - compost. In the lower part of the tank, it is necessary to make holes. Then, in the pot prepared in this way, four young cuttings are placed in the corners. They need to be poured, and then it is good to wrap the container with a plastic bag. Then cuttings can be taken to a well-lit place and not to touch for about a couple of weeks, while grapes are planted. Reproduction by green cuttings will then be in the care of small seedlings. It will be enough to open them once a week for ventilation and watering. And when there are noticeable new shoots, which will happen in about two months, the planting material can be transferred to the open ground. If the cuttings were started in June, the future bushes will be in the open in August and will have time to take root well before October and even form a tree-like trunk. In other cases, the seedling will have to be placed in the greenhouse conditions.

Reproduction of wild grapes by cuttings is carried out in a similar way. The most important thing here is to keep cuttings. To do this, they should be immediately placed in a bowl with water and close it well to prevent evaporation of moisture.
