Grocery goods: classification, list, features, storage conditions

We are all familiar with such concepts as a grocery store, groceries and groceries in general, but who knows for sure what they mean? Often, this group of grocery items means the whole assortment of outlets, regardless of the commodity nomenclature of a particular store. Although the grocery list includes a fairly extensive and varied list of food products, it is still not infinite, and the assortment of groceries can be classified.

What is groceries?

The buyer, having come to any food store, simply can not not get in it something from the category of groceries. The product falling under this category is the lion's share of the entire assortment of counters. Of course, among other departments, the store will have a confectionery, milk, gastronomy, and a showcase with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, but still grocery goods are the basis of any retail or wholesale store.

In dictionaries and manuals on the organization of outlets it is indicated that the grocery is that assortment of food products that does not require the creation of special conditions for their sale and storage. Mostly it is a "dry" product with a long shelf life.

The very word "grocery" came to us from overseas Turkey (bakkal - original, in some sources it is interpreted verbatim as "goods on face - look and take"). Groceries called those vendors, in whose shop windows you could buy everything you want. It can be concluded that once the food group called "groceries" presented on the shelves of stores was even more diverse than it is now, but this is most likely not an omission and a shortage of the modern market, but an exaggeration of the past.

List of goods

At the moment, buyers are available a much more extensive range of products than a few centuries ago and compare the diversity of even the largest boutique of the nineteenth century with a modern supermarket would be ridiculous. In addition, the current sanitary and hygienic standards and requirements that are presented to the sellers have become incomparably more stringent, and therefore the classification of the assortment in the outlets has become more regulated and unambiguous.

Grocery group of goods is rich in such positions:

  • Coffee, tea, cocoa, including packaged and instantly soluble concentrates;
  • All kinds of cereals, pasta and their derivatives (mixtures, cereals, cereals, cereals, breakfast cereals) ;
  • Flour from different types of grain, pancake mixtures;
  • Spices and seasonings, also salt and sugar;
  • Food additives, for example gelatin, citric acid, dry yeast, etc .;
  • Hermetically sealed refills (sauces, ketchups, mustard, horseradish, tomato paste);
  • vegetable oils;
  • Soups, potatoes, porridges and instant noodles.

Shtuchka and "sypuchka"

As you can see, groceries are quite a diverse concept. However, it can be classified according to one more principle. Most of the groceries are piece units, already packaged in small packs of food portions. Manufacturers offer their customers the most optimal and convenient weight packs, except that it speeds up the implementation process, because the seller does not need to use scales every time and perform complex calculations, each packing has its price and weight justification.

Expensive spices and condiments are sold in small portions of 5-15 grams, but you can always purchase large packages, if necessary. Another thing is cereals, sugar and flour - often in each package a standard serving of one kilogram, but the constant increase in prices forces manufacturers to go to the trick and a large number of prepackaged cereals and other bulk goods presented in supermarket and storefronts can weigh 750 or 900 grams .

Despite the large distribution of self-service stores, where it is much more convenient for customers to buy packaged goods. In many shops still sell loose goods, and in the markets you can even buy vegetable oil for spilling, coffee, teas and spices are also weighed and sold by the implementer in the amount that the buyer needs. In this method, grocery sales have a great advantage, because a customer can always reliably estimate the quality of the purchase in terms of appearance, consistency and smell.

Grocery store or only department?

Despite the wide assortment of groceries in the store, it is simply impossible to find a point of sale that would not sell products that do not fall under the category of grocery. Discerning buyers want to come to one store and buy there everything they need, avoiding going from one seller to another.

Modern trading conditions are formed in such a way that the owners of food pavilions are forced to give consumers all the variety of requested products, so the grocery store is sold only in one department, along with other groups of goods.

The note to the grocery retailer

A great advantage of selling groceries is that the products from this group have a long shelf life, do not require the creation of special conditions for their storage, and do not force sellers to equip technologically sophisticated warehouses.

Storage of groceries should take place in a cool room (not above 18 degrees Celsius), with low humidity. If the warehouse is raw, the products will become unsuitable for use, because cereals, spices and tea coffee absorb the moisture from the atmosphere, in addition, they can be saturated with extraneous scents, which also greatly damage their quality. An important requirement for warehouses intended for storing groceries is that the racks on which the goods will be laid should not touch the walls.
