St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome was designed and built throughout this century, but in general it was completed in the second half, after the construction of a grandiose dome over it. At the same time, there was an urgent need to bring all surrounding space around the cathedral into a single harmonious whole. This task brilliantly coped Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini. The area around the cathedral is his work. Here and today, believers from around the world gather in anticipation of the papal blessing.
