Donetsk region - rivers and their brief description

Donetsk region is the eastern region of Ukraine. The region has a dense hydrological system consisting of 110 watercourses of various sizes. The rivers and lakes of the Donetsk region are of great importance for the region. They are fully used both in industry and for water supply to all settlements. Almost half of these water streams are considered large, having a length of more than 25 km. Nine of them are the biggest. Their length is more than 200 km.

general characteristics

One of the largest industrial regions, which are of strategic importance, is the Donetsk region. The rivers flowing in this area belong to three basins. Most water streams are directed to the south, flowing into the Sea of Azov. Some rivers flow to the west - towards the Dnieper. The rest - to the east, flowing into the Don.

Since the Donetsk region is a flat region, the rivers flowing through these territories are of a flat type. All streams are characterized by calm currents and wide valleys. Feed on the river, mainly sediments, in the form of rain and snow. Small rivers have a property in the summer to dry up. On the territory of the region, 20 reservoirs have been built, which provide water supply in the region.

The rivers of Donetsk region

The names of the largest rivers that flow into the Sea of Azov are Mius, Krynka, Orlovka, Kalmius, Berestovaya, Bahmutka, Berda and others.

Watercourses flowing into the Don river basin : Seversky Donets, Strumok, Stallion, Bahmut, Mayachka, Nitrus and others.

The rivers carrying their waters to the Dnieper - the Wolf, Salt, Water, Bull, Gnilusha and others.

Seversky Donets

This watercourse is the largest river. It is worth noting that Seversky Donets, is also of great importance for such a region as the Donetsk region. The rivers of the local territory are used in industry, therefore, as a rule, they are considered to be rather polluted, especially in the area of cities.

Its name Seversky Donets received by its belonging to the river Don. It is its largest right tributary. In size, Seversky Donets occupies the 7th place along the length of the watercourses of Ukraine. The length of the river is more than 1,000 km, within the region - just over 100 km. The source of the Seversky Donets is the Central Russian Upland (Belgorod Region of Russia). It flows through the Rostov region in Russia, and in Kharkov, Donetsk and Lugansk in Ukraine.

The river has a small slope, and therefore its current is very calm, in some areas it is zero. The food has a mixed type, with a predominance of snow. Because of this, the water level in Seversky Donets fluctuates throughout the year, depending on the season. It has a narrow channel, the average latitude is 40-60 m, in some places it reaches 100 m. In the area of the constructed reservoirs, up to 4 km have been cleared. The bottom is composed of sandstones, has an uneven character with plains and rifts.

In winter, Seversky Donets freezes, because basically at this time, frosty weather is set, which is typical for all regions throughout the course of the watercourse. The Donetsk region is no exception. Rivers here are covered by a small thickness of ice on average from 30 to 60 cm. About 1,000 small and medium water streams flow directly into Seversky Donets.

Kalmius

A large river of the region, completely located within the Donetsk region. The length of the stream is 209 km. The source of Kalmius is the slope of the Donetsk ridge, near the town of Yasinovataya. Flows within the four districts of the region, in the city of Mariupol falls into the sea. Kalmius is a river passing through the regional center, Donetsk. On its coast in the city there are parks of culture and recreation, embankments, and there is a large reservoir. It has about 20 right and left tributaries.

The river is not particularly rich in representatives of the ichthyofauna. Most often there are such kinds of fish: minnow, oatmeal, chub, which is rich in Donetsk region. The rivers of this region are in a bad ecological situation. Kalmius is no exception. Unfortunately, the state of the river is critical, not in accordance with the norms of the SES. For many years it is forbidden to swim in a watercourse.

Mius

The river serving as an administrative boundary between two regions: Donetsk and Lugansk. In addition to Ukraine, Mius passes through 3 districts of the Rostov region. The river takes its beginning on the slope of the Donetsk ridge, runs in length of 258 km, and flows into the Miusky estuary (the basin of the Azov Sea).

The upper reaches of the watercourse pass through the rocky terrain, the width of the channel is small in this region, but, descending to the plains, it extends to 45 m. The maximum depth of the Miusa is about 6 m. The river bed is meandering, and the banks are flat, covered with meadow vegetation. Has a rain type of food.

Krynka

This river is the right tributary of the river Mius. The length of about 180 km (of which 160 km - on the territory of the region). The source of the river is the place of confluence of the Korsun and Bulavina rivers. Like other rivers in the Donetsk region, Krynka flows through the Rostov region (Russia).

The current near the watercourse is rapid, flows under a slight slope, because the banks here are high, sometimes rocky. The valley is narrow, sometimes reaches a depth of 60 m. The river has the property of squirming. The water in the Krynka is muddy, in the lower reaches it is cleared technically. The water world of Krynka is rich. Here there are pike-perch, bream, carp, carp, snake, turtles.

Wolf

Like other rivers in the Donetsk region, the Wolf originates on the southern slopes of the ridge. The length is 323 km. It flows through the territory of Donetsk and Dnepropetrovsk regions. It flows into Samara. On the bank of the Volchye is a large city of the Dnepropetrovsk region - Pavlograd. At the headwaters the river is represented by a large number of reaches, completely overgrown with reeds.
