Theater named after Lesya Ukrainka (Dneprodzerzhinsk) has existed for almost a hundred years. It is very popular with residents and visitors of the city. The repertoire of the theater is quite rich and varied.

History of the theater

The first actor's troupes - both professional and amateur - began to come on tour in Dneprodzerzhinsk in 1900. The Lesya Ukrainka Theater was founded in 1920 on the basis of an amateur collective. Lopatetsky led amateur artists. Then it was the Theater of Working Youth.

In 1935 he began to be called otherwise. Now it was the Theater of Russian Drama to them. M. M. Khataevich. The troupe from the very beginning worked very successfully, and for 10 years 10 new plays were staged. In 1937, the troupe grew to hundreds of people.

In the same year the city of Kamenskoye was renamed Dneprodzerzhinsk. Mendel Khataevich, whose name was then called the theater, was declared a spy and arrested. From that moment the collective was given the name of Taras Shevchenko.

During the war the theater was evacuated to Kazakhstan. There artists actively continued to work. After the end of the Second World War the theater was transferred to the city of Krivoy Rog. And in the Dniprodzerzhinsk mobile troupe began its work. In 1956, she was named Lesia Ukrainka.

In 1962, the theater was closed, as a decision was issued to reduce the number of theater companies in the cities.

In 1979 a musical and drama theater was opened in the city. The troupe was recruited from all over the USSR on a competitive basis. The main director of the new theater was appointed Simon Tereykovsky. The first performance of the troupe was played in 1981.

In the 80 years there were tumultuous changes. Directed by the directors. Became another repertoire. The theater tried to feel the modern viewer, understand his problems, find a common language with him, become clear to him. The performances became more relevant for that time. They paid attention to the problems of that era.

In the 90s of the 20th century the theater began to actively and toured extensively. At the same time, in connection with the arrival of a new director in the troupe, repertoire politics is changing. Now the main part of the productions consists of performances created according to classical works.

In 1995, the theater almost ceased to produce premieres, as the economic difficulties of the country led to the cessation of its funding. Many actors left, as they were no longer paid their salaries. There were no new productions either. After 2 years the situation improved, some artists returned to the theater. It was renovated. Enterprises of the city provided him with financial support.

Lesia Ukrainka's name returned to the name of the theater in 2000. At the same time the troupe was renewed, young cadres joined it. Then, over the next 10 years, it was replenished twice more.

Today the position of the main director is Vladimir Saranchuk.

Many performances of the Lesya Ukrainka Theater were awarded prestigious prizes. And also became laureates of competitions and festivals.

In 2012, the theater began to be called academic.
