The Pokrovsky Theater. Moscow State Academic Chamber Music Theater named after BA Pokrovsky

Theaters in Moscow provide the viewer with a huge selection of different types of art. Classical productions or modern avant-garde actions collect numerous sell-outs in the capital. At the heart of many creative trends lie the immortal schools of Stanislavsky, Gnesina and other equally significant personalities.

People who are in love with their profession, completely absorbed by the Melpomene erect temples of art. The Pokrovsky Theater thanks to its creator takes an honorable place in the Moscow creative environment.

History of creation

Boris Aleksandrovich Pokrovsky began work on a small opera "Not only love" in 1972. The successful work, the talented composer Shchedrin, marked the beginning of the existence of the Pokrovsky Chamber Theater.

The enthusiasm of the chief director knew no bounds. Delicately feeling through the art of the world around him, the pupil E. Gnessina, Boris Alexandrovich cooperated with all the "stars" of the era or was their discoverer. The master's energy was sufficient for teaching at the GITIS, for performing performances at the Bolshoi Theater and, finally, for creating his brainchild, free, unconditionally censored, where young actors can embody bold creative ideas.

But even the eminent well-deserved director for the birth of a new project, not all roads were opened. Moscow theaters hosted a young band with their productions, while thanks to the efforts of T. Khrennikov and D. Shostakovich in 1974, he officially did not gain a foothold in the basement of an apartment building.

The thorny path to success

Having occupied the former premises of the Sokol movie theater, the main director faced a lot of domestic problems. In the former bombproof shelter, which did not correspond to any state sanitary and fire regulations, the new Pokrovsky Theater still lived with great difficulty. The unique musical taste of the master allowed the creative object to quickly gain the audience's love. Popularity helped in 1997 to change the stage, and today the citadel of opera is located at ul. Nikolskaya, 17.

Favorite productions

One of the business cards is Shostakovich's premiere work "The Nose." The bright original Gogolian irony is revealed thanks to the works "Dead Souls", "Notes of a Madman", "Overcoat" and "Marriage" entered into the production. Dmitry Shostakovich himself categorically objected to the opera, his self-criticism knew no bounds. Thanks to the participation of Gennady Nikolayevich Rozhdestvensky, "The Nose" was seen not only by Moscow, but by the whole world. Theater Pokrovsky and after the death of the cult composer preserves the work in its original form.

The production of "Don Juan, or Punisher of Liberties", where the great conductor Lev Ossovsky also took part, still gathers a full hall. Mozart's timeless music creates an amplitude of mood from flashing humor to a hopeless tragedy. Having replaced several cast members for more than a quarter of a century, the work retained the ideological intent of the founder.

"The adventures of the rake" during the Soviet era had a huge resonance. The statement touched upon the issues of the soul and existence of Lucifer, which prejudiced the theatrical tendency to create only real life pictures. The joint work with Joseph Sumbatashvili and the unchanged Gennady Rozhdestvensky brought great success and love to the viewer. And today, after visiting the play, you can catch the invisible hand of the master, who still sets the right direction for the actors' game.

Pokrovsky's Musical Theater can rightly be proud of staging the opera by V.А. Mozart. For the kulis of the creative workshop is revealed to the viewer in the most vivid colors. The mores of capricious artists, entangled in endless intrigues in the struggle for the best place under the spotlights, can be best conveyed through cheerful dialogues and an easy musical leitmotif.

Innovative approach

Theater Pokrovsky sharply differed in the direction of their productions. The main director wanted that the viewer, who came to see his work, plunged into a fabulous extravaganza, which is so far from the realities of life's problems.

It was difficult to embody his innovative ideas with experienced artists, and thanks to his teaching he recruited a team from his own students of GITIS. All students of Pokrovsky had excellent data, and invaluable work experience under the guidance of the great master, helped to polish their talent and continue their further successful career. Each work was done with an emphasis not on scenery, costumes or even vocal data. The main thing was the actor's ability to convey emotion to the viewer, who by will became a participant in the action.

For a long time the battered material, sounding from every Moscow stage, was not interesting to Boris Alexandrovich. Thanks to talented colleagues, Gennady Nikolayevich Rozhdestvensky and Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich, he was able to embody all his ideas and plans. The cast was inspired to work on complex and interesting productions, conveying a dramatic game through the means of music.

Mastery of Reincarnation

The inconspicuous placement of the old bomb shelter, where the Pokrovsky Theater was located, became the center of the cultural life of not only Moscow or the Union. Even sophisticated foreign audiences were delighted with the works created by the talented creative alliance.

The slightest detail, gesture, pose, stress - everything is organic. The actor confidently plays on the stage, skilfully transferring the inner world of his hero. Admirers of musical art, after only one performance, will be able to appreciate the huge contribution of the director, who hones the slightest movement of each character on the stage to perfection.

Boris Alexandrovich possessed the talent of a teacher who, with fatherly love, passed on knowledge to his "child", to continue the development of opera craft.
Once again, skipping a new work through the prism of his genius, the legendary leader managed to create a completely new masterpiece, relevant and in demand today.

Continuing to live

Moscow State Academic Chamber Theater Pokrovsky today works without his favorite director. But, having given many forces to different scenes, both domestic and foreign, the titanium of opera art continues to live in the native walls of its offspring. The high bar set by the master allows his students to put works that serve as a reference for skill, both for actors and spectators. The genius of Pokrovsky continues to be embodied in no less talented productions of his students around the world.
