Decorating walls with decorative plaster yourself

Decorative plaster is a very common type of finishing material that can be applied to both internal and external surfaces. Naturally, you need to select it correctly. In addition, it is desirable to know exactly how the walls are decorated with decorative plaster.

Advantages of the presented material

So, it is necessary to understand why people often choose such a finish. The fact is that it has certain characteristics and advantages. Among them we can distinguish such:

- decoration of walls with decorative plaster does not require special preparation (with the exception of smooth mixtures and "Venetian");

- this material can hide certain small defects in the surface (even a slight curvature);

- the wall covering is very smooth and seamless;

- the mixture can be applied on almost any surface taking into account their characteristics (for wood, water-based material should not be used);

- decoration of walls with decorative plaster will allow you to make your home unique and very beautiful;

- the presented material has a wide palette of colors, is resistant to high temperature, does not emit harmful substances, practically does not lend itself to mechanical effects after drying.

Naturally, the process of applying the mixture to the surface is not simple, so all the nuances need to be considered here.

Varieties and features of material use

Decorating walls with decorative plaster is a painstaking process. First you need to decide what the material is. So, you can distinguish such types of plaster :

- Stone. In the composition of such a mixture there are small pieces of marble, granite, quartz and even semiprecious stones. Such plastering is the decoration of the facades. In addition, after drying, it is better to protect the layer with a colorless varnish.

- The Venetian. With this material you can create a unique design. The mixture contains calcareous flour, marble and granite dust. However, finishing the walls with decorative plaster of this type is complex, so you can not cope on your own.

- Structural. The presented mixture contains not only dust, but small pebbles. It can be used for both internal and external decoration.

- Fake. With this mixture, you can "draw" on the surface of different patterns.

What tools are needed to work?

So, before you finish the exterior walls with decorative plaster (or internal surface), you need to prepare all those tools that you will perform the actions. You will need:

- Trowel (the mixture is applied to the wall);

- falcon;

- rule;

- grater;

- putty knife;

- scraper;

- a small spatula to cover the cracks.

All tools should not be made of ordinary steel, which can contribute to the appearance of rusty spots on the surface. In addition, you may need a brush, roller or other elements with which you can create a unique style of the interior.

Surface preparation

So, in order for the finishing process to be not only easy, but also ensure a quality result, it is necessary to prepare the walls. To do this, you do not need much time (if there are no serious flaws or curvature on the surface).

First of all, you should free the wall from the old finish, if it was. For better adhesion of the material, as well as protection of the surface from negative effects, a primer should be used. If you want the plaster to have a certain shade, then for roughing the wall you can use a tinted composition. If necessary, the walls can be primed several times.

After drying the surface, it should be well moistened with water. Otherwise, the finish coat may dry up and crumble. Now you can start applying the selected mixture.

Technology of decorative plaster application

Now you can proceed to the main process. Interior decoration of walls with decorative plaster consists of the following stages:

1. Ready mix with the help of a trowel put on the prepared surface, and then properly level. The first layer should have a uniform thickness.

2. Next, you need to wait until the mixture grabs. Now you can apply the next, thinner layer, which you will simulate as you want. For example, the decoration of walls with decorative plaster "Bark beetle" is done using a metal and plastic float. They allow us to draw furrows of different structure and size.

3. After the second layer has completely dried, it is possible to protect the surface with a colorless varnish.

Please note that the more complex the invoice you have invented, the more layers you will have to apply.

Features of application of Venetian and external plaster

The main rule when working with the "Venetian" is the perfectly flat surface of the wall. Next, you need to use coloring and then apply a thin layer of plaster. Clean the surface and remove any irregularities only after the mixture has dried well. This will take at least 24 hours. The maximum number of layers that you can apply is 12. After grinding, it is desirable to cover the wall with special white wax.

As for the exterior finish, then here too there are special features. The surface of the wall should be pre-treated with ordinary plaster or creamy cement mortar. Note that the decorative layer should have a semi-dry consistency. After it dries (at least 7 days), you can impose the following, the texture of which varies at your discretion.

Take into account that when working with an external wall you will have to use special beacons that will help to apply plaster on the level. Naturally, it is better to protect the finishing layer with varnish.

In addition to external and internal surfaces, the walls of the balcony are also decorated with decorative plaster. There is nothing complicated here, as the application technology is almost the same everywhere.
