Coated Fox Terrier. Character, care, photo

Coarse Fox Terrier - the dog is quite friendly, cheerful and bold. She likes to play with children and gets along very well with different pets. Such a dog can become an excellent companion, and for hunting enthusiasts - a good helper.

Origin

It is very difficult now to compile a true history of the ancient breed of dogs, which include the coarse-eyed fox terrier. But we can safely say that it exists since time immemorial. The first information about similar dogs that lived in the territory of modern Britain, appeared around 55 BC.

The breed itself is known from the XVII century. She was brought out in England specifically to hunt badgers and foxes living in burrows. That is why this breed of dogs belongs to the group of northerners. But that is not all. Quite often, fox terriers are used as hounds - they raise game from thickets.

Formation of rock

It is believed that these dogs arose as a result of the crossing of three kinds of terriers: the Old English black and tan, the smooth-haired black and ter-terrier, and also the white English that had already disappeared. There is a suggestion that in the process of formation, the blood of spaniels, bull terriers and beagles was mixed for better flair, giving greater malice and original marks. After crossing hybrids with red and brown breeds, a light color of the dogs turned out, and by this they differed markedly from foxes. I must say that such crosses were carried out quite cautiously, so the terrier type practically did not change.

The size and shape of the dog to a greater extent determined the diameter of the fox hole. As a result of such a long selection, a small terrier with a predominantly white color in color, and also with black and red spots turned out. By the middle of the 19th century, the breed of the Fox Terrier had a beautiful appearance. A little later, it gained immense popularity in England.

First exhibitions

There are two types of fox terriers: wool and smooth-haired. The history of the latter is known. But as for the woolly dogs, their origin can only be guessed. Most likely, their ancestors were coarse-wooled Welsh terriers, crossed with smooth-haired fox terriers. As a result, white color, characteristic spots and the shape of the head were added.

At the very beginning, the smooth-haired and coarse-haired fox terrier was demonstrated at the exhibitions together. At that time, they were not yet divided into different species. At the same time, smooth-haired representatives of the breed always dominated, as there were significantly more of them.

Separate classes for these dogs were established only in 1872 during the exhibition in Birmingham. It was since then that the varieties began to be exhibited separately. A separate standard for a breed, such as a coarse-eyed fox terrier, was adopted in 1913. At the same time, they founded their association. I must say that the original standard was revised many times, but only small corrections were added.

Description of the breed

Fox Terrier is a dog possessing all the qualities that are necessary for an enemy attack. She has strong teeth and jaws, she is fearless and strong. The animal is well built, has an elegant look.

The dog weighs up to 8 kg, its height at the withers does not exceed 40 cm. Bitches have slightly smaller parameters. Head slightly flat and elongated. Muzzle narrows to the nose. Well developed mustaches and beards, they give the head a characteristic rectangular shape. The neck is rather muscular and thin. Eyes are planted deeply, they are small, dark and very alive. The ears are V-shaped and hanging forward. Color two- or three-color: predominant white with red and black spots.

Character

The fox terrier is a mobile and easily excitable animal. Dogs of this breed are always ready for games and will be able to make an excellent company for people who lead an active lifestyle. If they are not brought up properly, they will dominate the house and will be unmanageable.

Foxes just love to dig. They can do this not only on the street, but also in the apartment. This behavior of a pet is not liked by all owners. The breed of fox terrier, the testimonies of which indicate that the owners must have a lot of patience, is not suitable for all people. Quail pets are quite bold, and not everyone is able to tolerate them all the time. These dogs have an excellent defensive reaction, so punishing them is not easy: they can spitefully growl or even bite.

It is known that dogs of breed fox terrier often bark. Responses of owners in this regard are as follows: excessively loud sounds irritate not only the owners themselves, but also their neighbors.

As already mentioned above, initially these dogs were bred for hunting. Congenital instincts force them to pursue not only cats, but other small animals. That is why they are often lost. To prevent this, you need to walk on the street only on a leash. Fox has a warlike character, so they often get into fights with other dogs, but their size does not interest them at all.

The houses of the animals are very friendly, they are good for all family members, and also love games with children - all this is about dogs of breed fox terrier. Reviews of their owners are almost always positive. But it is not recommended to leave the dog alone with young children, as these four-legged often bite, which can greatly frighten the child.

Fox Terrier, whose character description will be incomplete, if not to mention the special cheerfulness, will help to brighten up not the best moments in the life of its owners.

Content

A dog that does not participate in exhibitions will not create big problems and will not require much time. Animal needs daily exercise. If it is available, the fox terrier will fit perfectly even in a small city apartment. If he does not get it, all energy will be directed to furniture and other items in the house. Also, a lack of exercise can affect the behavior of the dog. Do not forget about the intellectual burden. It can be games, the execution of teams, as well as participation in various competitions.

As you know, some of the finest hunters for small game are representatives of the breed woolly fox terrier. Reviews and observations of the owners of these animals suggest that the pet should be lowered from the leash very carefully. Foxes literally enjoy running, so they will pursue any small animal they encounter.

General care

Dogs need a diet, they can not be overfed. A moving animal consumes a lot of energy. In order to fill it, you need to develop a balanced menu, which contains many different nutrients.

A pet that does not take part in show programs and exhibitions, comb it at least twice a week, and bathe only if necessary. To wool was healthy and had a beautiful appearance, apply trimming (plucking) at least once a year. This procedure can be assigned to a professional or to conduct it yourself.

As for the claws, they are sheared with a special claw clip at least once every two weeks. The wool between the fingers of the dog in the pads of the paws is either cut or plucked. In winter, this procedure is especially important. It will prevent the accumulation of a large amount of snow on the feet and the formation of ice in the gaps between the fingers. This should be done at least once a month.

Cupping

The tail of this breed of dog should be thick, densely covered with hair and all the time raised up. When stopping, usually about two-thirds of its length is left. This is necessary so that you can grab the dog by the tail during her work. Too short circumcision is not suitable for exhibitions or hunting.

Care of hair

At the first glance at the dog, you can determine whether the owner loves it and whether she cares for her properly. All this becomes noticeable in the appearance of the animal, and primarily in the state of its wool.

Special attention to yourself requires a hairless fox terrier. Care of a fur coat of such a dog is called a trimming. This procedure is a plucking of small patches of wool at different stages of growth of the animal. There is one more thing - grumming. It is necessary to prepare the dog for the exhibition.

Carefully and professionally executed trimming makes the fox terrier very beautiful and elegant. And how he draws to himself the rapturous looks of numerous passers-by! If the goal is to become not just a woolly fox terrier, but a dog-winner of an exhibition, then it is impossible to neglect the trimming.

At once it is necessary to warn, that these animals do not shear with scissors. Such a procedure will make their wool soft and thin, and its color will fade. After a few haircuts, a luxurious and elegant dog can turn into a simple wadded cotton ball.

The bright coloration of tough hair besides aesthetic has a practical value. First of all, the wool is dense and does not allow water to pass through, and is also almost not dirty. In addition, when walking through the forest or during a hunt, a bright dog is clearly visible. A sheared specimen often suffers from skin diseases such as dermatitis and eczema.

It should be more often to examine the eyes of your pet. With minor sourings, they are wiped with a clean cotton pad, previously moistened in boiled water or tea brew. If the eyes are red and teary, immediately consult a veterinarian.

Health problems

Fox Terriers have a penchant for Perthes' disease and epilepsy. In addition, they have frequent problems with the eyes (cataracts, dysthiasis) and hearing. Most often deafness is suffered by individuals who have a predominantly white color.

If you decide to buy yourself a dog of this breed, then, first of all, it is necessary to consult the breeder and learn from him about all possible problems with the animal's health that may arise in the future.

Education

Training a fox-terrier, like a puppy of any other breed, usually comes down to performing certain commands, searching and importing, i.e. Submission of various items. The first classes are held either at home or on a section of the yard fenced off from the street. In this case, the presence of other people or animals is undesirable. For lessons with a puppy, his favorite toys are best used. It can be a doll, a ball or any other object, which he likes to drag and tingle with pleasure.

At the first stage, only one of the toys is taken, and also the favorite delicacy of the puppy is reserved. When he executes the command given by the owner, it should be encouraged and given him a piece of food. Such classes should be held constantly, you can even several times a day.

Coarse fox terrier, reviews of which are mostly positive, is a very clever dog. He almost always tries to please his master, but sometimes he behaves independently and may not perform the commands given to him. But, as experience shows, it is not difficult to train puppies of these dogs at all. You just need to use the method of so-called positive reinforcement, which is that for each performed command the animal is praised and rewarded with a piece of favorite treat.

Hunting

Hunting with the fox terrier requires the preparation of a dog from an early age. But before you begin to familiarize the puppy with any normal beast in natural or artificial conditions, it should be taught to simple commands, for example, "Good!" Or "It is impossible!". At six months, the infant's teeth are completely replaced by permanent teeth, and during this period, the character becomes established. Therefore, pickles for nesting animals are recommended to begin at this age. To teach a puppy to hunt, you need to follow the numerous recommendations of specialists. If there is at least one adult norn, the training of a young and as yet inexperienced dog will be simplified and greatly accelerated.

As noted above, the fox terrier was bred as a hunting breed of dogs. Therefore, it easily penetrates into the burrows and can fight with foxes on an equal footing. Even by the name of the breed itself, this fact becomes obvious. After all, "fox" in English means "fox". Their hunting instincts these terriers have preserved to this day, but in modern life they are basically just domestic pets.
