Clamp for wires - a unique device

In Soviet times, in the Research Institute VNII (project "Electrician") was invented a clamp for wires power transmission lines. It was important for scientists to develop a device that would have high strength, increased reliability and enhanced versatility. In this project, researchers from many industries, including chemical ones, were involved.

The invention of scientists

Since the fifties of the last century, this invention is used to connect wires to butt and is actively used in electrical engineering. This clamp is also called electrocontact, or wedge, with it you can work without removing the insulation.

  1. Wedge clamp for wires. The scope of such connections is quite small. It is limited by an overhead power line. This is because only two conductors of identical cross-section can be connected with a wedge clamp for the wires.
  2. Tap-off clamp for connecting the power line . The disadvantage of this device: using it, you need a special screw instead of a push mechanism.
  3. The clamp for wires of electric power lines is a wedge-shaped body in the form of a chute, in the cavity of which there is an insert and a push mechanism. Such a device provides only a compression of the conductor. Scientists managed to invent hanging clamps, which are fastened in intermediate supports.

For all variants of connection, such devices allow connection to the already used conductors without requiring de-energization of the common line.

The peculiarity of this design is that it is made of thermoplastic resistant to ultraviolet and reinforced with a fiberglass structure. Advantages: advantageously differs from other devices in that it has a high ultimate load, which provides the possibility of increasing the length of span of wires (up to 40 m). Such a distance between the supports may be carried out using a material of 25 mm 2 cross-section. It is often permissible to perform assembly works with anchor clamps of this modification with untwisted input wires.
