Chusovskoy Metallurgical Plant: History, Products, Prospects

JSC "Chusovoy Metallurgical Plant" is one of the oldest steelworks in the Urals. Founded in the XIX century, it was for a long time the largest profile enterprise of the country. Today, CMP is the leader in the production of springs for vehicles.

Historical reference

Founded in 1879, the Chusovoy Metallurgical Plant became the pride of Russia. Equipped with the latest equipment at the time, it annually melted millions of poods of cast iron and steel. During the civil war the enterprise suffered greatly, but the factory workers did not abandon their offspring and after the establishment of the Soviet power they restored the shops.

At the Chusovskoy Metallurgical Plant in the 30s, a responsible mission was assigned to arrange the production of spring steel for tractors and agricultural machinery. In appearance, this detail does not seem to be the most difficult, however, when it is manufactured, a metal with outstanding characteristics is used. For its smelting requires a high production culture, appropriate equipment and possession of the "secrets" of materials science.

In 1935, the blast furnace No. 3 started working. Its volume of 280 m ³ was a record not only for the USSR. In 1936 the factory workers received the first ferrovanadium in the country. The Great Patriotic War demanded an increase in production. In 1943, for seven months, a new blast furnace was built, which allowed three times to increase cast iron smelting.

Today, every second Russian car has springs from ChMZ. Chusovskoy Metallurgical Plant, whose photo amazes the size of the production area, is part of OMK's largest industrial group (United Metallurgical Company). Production is located in the heart of the Ural Mountains, near the raw materials base and energy sources.

Chusovskyi spring

Along with metal products (rolled products and cast iron), the plant has been producing springs for motor vehicles since 1973. Today, the workshop of the CMP autopressor represents a large-scale production, in terms of the volume of products eclipsing similar enterprises in Europe.

The products of the Ural steelmakers meet the requirements set by both domestic and foreign standards. The Chusovoy Metallurgical Plant is certified according to ISO9001 / 2008, and directly the spring production was certified according to ISO / TS16940 in 2011.

Personnel policy is focused on attracting young people, educating a generation of "future workers" who are able to quickly retrain and master related areas of work. For them, they try to create decent working conditions, organize recreational activities, and guarantee modern medical care.

Hi-tech

An important feature of the technological process of making springs is a complete production cycle: from smelting of pig iron to assembly of products. ChMZ specializes in the production of rolled products from specialized steel grades. Not without reason steel stripes of the plant are used by most of the spring enterprises of the Russian Federation and the CIS.

In 2003, the Chusovoy Metallurgical Plant mastered the production of innovative springs of increased durability, obtained by technology of bulk-surface hardening. Only a few companies in the world are able to produce this product using HMO technology. The new development allowed to reduce the weight of the spring by 30%, and to increase the operational durability by half - to 200,000 km. Most models of the automaker KAMAZ are equipped with elastic elements produced using an IPF.

Modernization

Constant investments in production made it possible to launch mills and rolling for parabolic spring billets, a high-tech thermal line with rapidly adjustable dies, and a new painting line. The operation of the equipment is controlled by automated computerized complexes.

Every few years the material and technical base is modernized. This allows CMP to offer consumers more than 500 names of spring products. Among the customers of the Chusovsky plant are the country's largest auto-manufactures. Also the nomenclature for foreign cars is actively mastered.

Production

Today at ChMZ they produce:

• Springs to trucks, trolley buses, buses, minibuses, off-road vehicles, special vehicles.
• Cast iron (vanadium, complex-alloyed, refined, refined).
• Ferrovanadium.
• Vanadium Pentate.
• Metal rolling.
• Agglomerate.

Chusovoy Metallurgical Plant - reconstruction

The rapid growth of gas and oil production in the 2000s required significant volumes of modern pipe products. The government and OMK planned a large-scale reconstruction, which envisaged the reorientation of significant capacities for the production of seamless pipes. Initially, CMP was supposed to produce up to 400,000 tons of pipe, followed by an increase in volumes to 500,000 tons per year.

The project was launched in 2012 and was supported by the administration of Perm Krai. The investment portfolio was estimated at 50 billion rubles. Organizational work was actively carried out, suppliers of equipment were determined. For the clearing of the territory, some of the workshops were dismantled. However, the sanctions of 2015, the weakening of the ruble, the change in the situation helped to freeze the ambitious project.
