Characteristics of Grinev and Shvabrin. Comparative characteristics of Grinev and Shvabrin

The novel "The Captain's Daughter" written in 1836 by Pushkin is a logical continuation of the theme of "an insignificant hero," an ordinary man who can not boast of great wealth, influence, or serious connections. The main character is close to the people, has positive qualities of character, is kind, fair. The story is based on an insurrection led by Pugachev, but Pushkin did not set himself the goal of recreating historical events, against their backdrop he described the life stories of ordinary people.

General characteristic of Grinev

Peter Grinev comes from a noble family, but his parents are poor, so he grew up in an atmosphere of provincial-local life. The hero can not boast of a good upbringing, admits that he grew up inexperienced. Since the father was a retired military man, then Peter became an officer. It is a conscientious, gentle, kind and fair-minded young man looking at everything through rose-colored glasses. Over time, illusions are dispelled, and he understands how the world really is arranged.

Because of the moral instinct and good education, even from the most difficult and dangerous situations, Pyotr Grinv emerges unharmed. Characteristics of the hero shows his rapid spiritual growth. The man was able to consider in Masha Mironova a moral personality and a pure soul, he had the courage to ask forgiveness from the serf Savelyich, Peter saw in Pugachev not just a rebel but a just and generous man, he realized how really low and mean Shvabrin is. Despite the terrible events that were going on during the internecine struggle, Grinev managed to preserve honor, humanity and fidelity to his ideals.

General description of Shvabrin

The characteristics of Grinev and Shvabrin allow the reader to understand who is who in fact. Alexei Ivanovich is a nobleman by birth, he is animated, swarthy, not very handsome. For the time of Grinev's arrival in the Belgorod fortress, Shvabrin served there for five years, he was transferred here for murder. Everything speaks of his meanness, arrogance and heartlessness. At the first meeting with Peter Alexei Ivanovich introduces him to the inhabitants of the fortress, responding to all with contempt and mockery.

Shvabrin is very intelligent and much more educated than Grinev, but there is no kindness in him. This character was compared to a roll-field, a man without a clan, who could only adapt to different circumstances. Nobody loved and did not expect him, but nobody needs him either. At the end of the story, Shvabrin's black hair after the worries worsened, but his soul remained black, envious and spiteful.

Comparative characteristics of Grinev and Shvabrin

In each story there must be an antagonist of the protagonist. If Pushkin did not create the image of Shvabrin, then Grinev's spiritual growth would not be so noticeable, besides, it would be impossible to develop a love line between Mary and Peter. The writer in all contrasts two young officers of noble origin. A brief description of Shvabrin and Grinev shows that even for service in the fortress, they came for various reasons. Petra was sent here to serve, so that the offspring sniffed this powder, served in the army. Alexei was sent to Belogorsk fortress for the murder of the lieutenant.

The expression "military duty" each of the heroes understands differently. Shvabrinu anyway serve whom, if only it was good. During the Pugachev uprising Alexei immediately turned to the rebels, forgetting about the oath and honor. Grinev, under pain of death, refuses to swear allegiance to the rebels, but natural kindness saved him. The fact is that once he gave Pugachev a hare sheepskin and handed a glass of wine, and he in return pays gratitude and saves his life to Peter.

An apple of discord for the heroes was the captain's daughter. Grinev and Shvabrin fell in love with Masha, but their love is very different. Peter composes poetry for the girl, and Alexei criticizes them, spreading them to pieces. This is understandable, because he likes Maria, but could a sincerely loving person put his beloved in a bad light and advise the opponent to give her earrings instead of poetry, so she went to him at dusk.

The relationship between Shvabrin and Mary

Alexei Ivanovich likes the captain's daughter, he takes care of her, but when he receives a refusal, dissolves about her dirty and deceitful rumors. This person is not capable of sincere, kind and pure feelings, Masha needs him only as a beautiful doll, which can be changed in his own way. The characteristics of Grinev and Shvabrin show how different people are from each other. Peter would never allow himself to be slandered or forced to do something by his beloved.

Alexei - mean and cowardly, acts bypassing ways. In a duel he shot Grinev in the back, then told Peter's parents about the duel, so that they forbade his son to marry Maria. After moving to the side of Pugachev, Shvabrin uses his power, forcing the girl to become his wife. Even in the end, he can not admit the happiness of Grinev and Mironova, so she slanders Peter.

Grinev-Masha relations

Pyotr Andreevich nourishes the brightest and purest feelings for the captain's daughter. He wholeheartedly became attached to the family of Mironov, who became his own. A young girl immediately liked the officer, but he tried to act delicately, composed poems for her to win the heart of a beauty. The characteristics of Grinev and Shvabrin give an idea of the concept of honor in these two people.

Alexey Ivanovich was wooing Mironova, but was denied, he could not with dignity recognize his defeat, so he tried to tarnish the reputation of the girl with all his might. Grinev in turn protects the lover, causing the opponent to a duel. Peter lives ready to give for Masha's sake, at the risk, he gets the girl out of Shvabrin's confinement, takes her out of the fortress. Even in court, he tries not to tarnish Mironova's honor, although he faces life penalties. This behavior speaks of the nobility of the hero.

Ratio of Grinev to Pugachev

Pyotr Andreevich does not approve of the actions of the rebels and zealously defends the fortress from them, during the execution of officers he refuses to swear allegiance to Pugachev, because he serves the empress. Nevertheless, Grinev admires the magnanimity, justice and organizational abilities of the leader of the rebels. The hero with Pugachev have their own, somewhat strange, but friendly relations based on mutual respect. The rebel remembers the kindness of Grinev and repays him the same. Although Peter did not go to the side of Pugachev, but he remains good about him.

Shvabrin's relation to Pugachev

The characteristics of Shvabrin and Peter Grinev show a different attitude towards the honor of the military from these officers. If the main character and under pain of death did not wish to betray the empress, then for Aleksei Ivanovich, his own life is most important. As soon as Pugachev called on the officers to go over to him, Shvabrin immediately turned to the side of the rebels. For this person there is nothing sacred, at the right moment he is always ready to substitute the bandwagon for others, therefore recognition of the power of rebels is nothing more than an attempt to save one's life.

The spiritual formation of Grinev and the fall of Shvabrin

Throughout the story, the reader follows the spiritual growth of the protagonist. The characteristics of Grinev and Shvabrin speak for themselves: if there is nothing sacred for Alexei, he is ready to cross anyone to achieve his goal, then Peter conquers with his nobility, kindness, honesty and humanity.
