The history of the station begins in 1853. At this time, there is a construction of a railway between the capital and Peterhof. After that, the roads were also laid to Gatchina, Krasnoe Selo and Tallinn. Financing for the construction was not from the treasury, it was sponsored by Stieglitz, a well-known industrialist. All this time the station was named Peterhof, but after the start of communication with Tallinn was renamed the Baltic.

The building of the station was built by architect A.I. Krakau. The prototype for its construction was the Paris East Station. The architect took it as a basis, but approached the process creatively and refreshed the project with new ideas. The building of the station is divided into two outbuildings, which are united by a main facade. The central part is decorated with towers and stained-glass windows with built-in watches.

The first reconstruction of the station was carried out in the 1930s. In the process, the main entrance was moved from under the glass dome to remove the start of the tracks, replacing it with a waiting room. All this made the station more comfortable for passengers and allowed to increase the useful area of the premises.

Another important change was made in 1955. The lobby of the subway was attached to the station building. At the same time the symmetry of the station was broken, but the comfort of passengers increased significantly. Step-by-step accessibility of the metro and the station allow making the trip convenient for city residents and tourists. Entrance to the lobby of the station is decorated with portraits of famous captains of navigators - Makarov, Kornilov, Ushakov and Nakhimov.

The Baltic station often took part in many events of the city. He was in the thick of the main actions during the uprising of the Great October Revolution. The building was captured by the rebels, who held it in defense and repulsed the attacks.

It was in the Baltic direction that the first electric train was launched. Its route continued to the Ligovo railway station . This event happened in 1930.

The station square was first decorated with the Stalin monument. Later it was dismantled. At present, the Baltic Square serves as a place for the departure of public and commercial transport routes to the suburbs of St. Petersburg.
