As in the old days was called a street car park? History of the word

Many of us have very remote ideas about the history of our country, especially about its domestic aspects. Well, for example, how was once called a simple stop, which we call a "stop of public transport," or, more simply, a bus, trolleybus stop and the like?

And yet 100 years ago there were such stops in the cities.

For example, ask the following question: "How was the street parking of cabmen used in the old days?". We will try to give an exhaustive answer to this question.

But all in order.

Who are the drivers?

The profession of a cabman in the cities was as common as today the profession of a guard or driver.

The work was hard. The cabman spent all day on the street. Is it good in the summer, and in winter, in the autumn, in the spring?

That's why people from the lower social classes of tsarist Russia worked in this sphere. Often, former peasants, failed workers, that is, people accustomed to hard, debilitating work.

If the driver had his own horse and cart, then he was considered a man of honor among the cabmen. Others often hired the owners of horses and carts and paid them most of their daily earnings.

Therefore, this is quite an unreasonable question: "How was the street parking of cabmen used in the old days?". Perhaps there will be something in the answer that hints at the fact that these cabbies had at least some social guarantees: for example, a warm hut, a stop in which one could warm up. But, unfortunately, there was no such hut.

In general, a cab driver in tsarist Russia is an almost modern migrant-Uzbek driving a fixed-route taxi, or, more simply, an ordinary "minibus", which can be found on the streets of cities and towns of our Motherland.

As in the old days was called a street car park? A simple answer to the question

Trying to answer this question, let's look at the dictionaries.

For example, the dictionary of Russian historisms tells us that this parking of cabmen was called the simple word "stock exchange".

"What is such an exchange? The modern reader will be puzzled. - After all, the exchange and stop - it's completely different things! ".

"Of course," we answer him, "today they mean very different things, but once the word" stock exchange "had several meanings."

You can find out about these meanings by referring to the most well-known explanatory dictionary in our country, namely to the dictionary of V.I. Dahl.

So, Dahl gives the following double interpretation of the word "stock exchange":

  • The first: the exchange is a place of gathering of people of trading, merchants for the decision of the vital business questions.
  • Second: the stock exchange is a place for picking up cabs, their stopping, on which they waited for their riders.

The origin of the word "stock exchange" as a place for cabbies

By the way, today few people will tell you, as in the old days was called street parking cabs. And this is not surprising, because the word "stock exchange" today has a completely different meaning. This is not even just a place for gathering merchants, but a very serious institution where the sale and purchase of shares (the commercial exchange) is taking place, or employers and future employees (the labor exchange) meet among themselves.

It should be noted that in Rus, the word "stock exchange" as a designation of a place for cabbies has not taken root right away. Most likely, it was introduced after the reforms of Peter the Great, because this word is of German origin.

So in the official documents of tsarist Russia were named those places on the streets of the city, where cabs should stop. The city authorities thus controlled these workers. In the same people, another name for this place has taken root: the "deck."

However, in all the circulars of that time, the only answer to the question of how the street car park was called was the exchange.

The fate of this expression

By the way, this concept has not caught on among the people. After the revolution of 1917, it disappeared altogether from all documents. The Exchange was only called enterprises of economic or social importance.

Already in 20 years, the question of what was called in the old street car park, few people could answer. And the cabmen gradually became unnecessary. They were replaced by cars, buses, trolley-buses, metro.
