Area of Yekaterinburg: history

From time immemorial there was such a tradition that simultaneously with the foundation of the city, it was necessary to place space for it in the square. This rule extended to large and small urban settlements. The area of Ekaterinburg has not become an exception.

Value

After all, the square in the life of the inhabitants of the city played an important role. This is not just a trading platform. It has traditionally remained the venue for a variety of events, such as litigation and the organization of fairs. In an era of lack of media, the townspeople came here to learn the latest news, the municipal authorities announced official information.

The main square of Yekaterinburg with the name "Square of 1905" is no exception. But in the mouths of local residents, it sounds just like a "square".

History: The Beginning

All the upheavals that took place in the history of Russia, to a certain extent, influenced the transformation of the square.

Due to the fact that initially this territory was mainly used as a big outlet, it is natural for the residents of Yekaterinburg, it was a trading area. This name existed until the middle of the 18th century. A significant event in the history of the city contributed to its renaming.

A very old building of the Catherine Church was demolished and a wooden Epiphany church was built. From now on, the square became the Church Square. Almost a quarter of a century passed, and near it a stone Bogoyavlensky cathedral was laid. Since the 30-ies of the 19 th century it is a cathedral. This event was the occasion for a new renaming. Notable merchants - Shabalin, Saveliev, Korobkov - got rich mansions near the square. In the 50 years of the 19th century a gymnasium was built for the representatives of the stronger sex. The area of Yekaterinburg changed along with the history of the city.

History of the square in 1902

Over time, the old Gostiny Dvor appeared in its southern part, and the square itself acquired a civilized European look - completely paved with cobblestones, along which the townspeople and visitors can still go today.

And in 1902 it was sad for the Gostiny Dvor - there was a fire on its territory. But, as the Russian proverb says, there is no thin without good. The surviving premises did not begin to be restored, but the New Gostiny Dvor was built, but already two-storeyed.

Place of rallies

The first revolution in Russia in 1905 did not ignore Yekaterinburg, or rather, its area.

Almost 11 years - from 1906 to the 1917 revolution - not far from the Cathedral there was a monument to Emperor-Liberator Alexander II. The fact that this tsar abolished shameful serfdom was not properly appreciated by revolutionary-minded soldiers. He suffered the fate of all the monuments that had to do with tsarism.

In March 1917, the area of the city of Yekaterinburg became the venue for a rally in support of the February Revolution, and a little more than a month later - the May demonstration.

Transformations after the February Revolution of 1917

For the pedestal, which remained after the demolition in 1917 of the monument to Alexander II, for a long time could not find no application. Almost two years - from 1918 to 1920 - it was a statue of Liberty, then the bust of Karl Marx stood for some two or three months in 1920, after which in May 1920 a monument was erected on the pedestal with the symbolic name "Emancipation of Labor". S.D. Erzya worked on the sculpture. But the demonstration took place six years later. According to the sculptor's plan, the symbol of the released work was to be a naked man, wrapped in chains, which he tried to tear. Apparently, not all citizens liked this idea. The area of Yekaterinburg sought to decorate other buildings.

The point in the epic with monuments and a marble pedestal was put in 1930 - the construction was completely dismantled. The same sad fate befell the Cathedral Epiphany Cathedral, because what he personified was contrary to the ideology of Marxism-Leninism. The greatness of the cathedral is evidenced by the following facts: height, including the spire - 66 meters; The maximum number of parishioners, which accommodated the premises - 4,5 thousand. The idea of restoring the historic church has not lost its power even now.

At the site of the dismantled pedestal with the building of the cathedral in 1930, a tribune of granite was built. During the festive parades timed to the achievements of the revolution and Soviet power, the party leaders standing on it saw off the columns of workers and military men. In 1957, the area of the city of Yekaterinburg was decorated with a monument of the leader of the proletariat, VI Lenin.

The modern name

However, the period of the late 20's and early 30's was marked not only by the destruction of the monuments of the Russian empire that had fallen during the summer. Two tram lines appeared, three more were completed on the already existing two floors of the New Gostiny Dvor. From 1947 to 1954, the efforts of the architect G.A. Golubev's building has significantly changed, including a major overhaul of the facade; The towers were built with a gilded spire surface, from inside the battle of the chimes was heard; On the roof along the perimeter gypsum figures were arranged .

Thanks to the metro station with the same name "Square 1905" (Ekaterinburg) built in 1994, the visit to the square became more comfortable. In memory of the revolutionary events of 1905, the modern name took hold of it. Yekaterinburg is developing every year. The camera ("Area 1905" with its help can be seen from every corner of the country and not only) helps to prevent unrest and unpleasant incidents.
