Among the Russian medical educational institutions, the Petersburg Academy of Mechnikov, which is the alma mater of many outstanding doctors and scientists, occupies a special place for more than 125 years. Mechnikov Academy: History

The first educational institutions involved in the training of medical professionals, appeared in Russia in the middle of the 18th century. A century later, there was a need to create a special institute where doctors could improve their knowledge and be able to apply the latest achievements in medical science in practice. This idea was voiced by N. Pirogov and E. Eikhvald and found strong support from Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna Romanova. This "scientist of our family," as the father-in-law, Emperor Paul the First, called it, procured for the new educational institution a piece of land located on the Preobrazhensky Platz and, together with other benefactors, financed the construction of the building of the clinical hospital.

Another important milestone in the history of the Academy was the discovery in 1907 of a psychoneurological institute, whose origins were founded by Academician V. Bekhterev. In 1920, the medical faculty of this university was transformed into the Institute of Medical Knowledge, and after repeated reorganization and renaming in June 1994, the institute became known as the St. Petersburg Medical Academy. Mechnikov. In parallel, the Institute for Advanced Studies (GIDUV) was developing, where Soviet doctors from time to time were required to take refresher courses. In the period from 1985 to 2011, the educational activities of both universities have undergone major changes, and in 2011 the Mechnikov Academy was merged with the St. Petersburg Academy of Postgraduate Education at the Northwestern State Medical University. The Mechnikov State Medical Academy is a major center for the training of highly qualified scientific and teaching personnel. Over the past years, the Academy has graduated about two thousand doctors from 60 countries located in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America. At the moment more than 900 students from 42 countries of the world study at the faculty for foreign citizens, which undoubtedly testifies to the high quality of teaching in SZGMU.

Clinical activity

The clinical base of SZGMU is the famous clinical hospital of Peter the Great. Today, the clinics of the university treat almost 1,300 patients, which are served by more than 1,500 medical workers. Among the staff there are two corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, 111 doctors of science and professors and over two hundred candidates of medical sciences. Moreover, a significant part of the medical staff was repeatedly retrained in well-known institutions in Europe and the United States. In the clinics of the Mechnikov Academy, they successfully cope with pathology of the circulatory, respiratory and digestive organs, endocrine and urinary systems, as well as disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

Publishing Activities

Architectural complex

On June 24, 560 graduates were mobilized, and before the beginning of 1942 1370 undergraduates and 246 teachers were called into the army.
