A foot is how many centimeters and meters?

Often, in fiction, and in any specialized publications, you can find the value of measuring the length - foot. This is how many meters and centimeters are familiar to us? It is difficult to give an unambiguous answer to this question. The thing is that it (the answer) depends on what kind of foot is meant - English, Roman, Russian or Hamburg.

You see how many of these quantities. In general, each more or less advanced country had its own foot.

In order to understand why this confusion occurs, let's just try to figure out what that word means, and then we'll find out how many feet are inches.

So, from English this word is translated as a foot, everyone knows it. And what is your foot length? You will say that everyone's legs are different, and you will be right. But in ancient times people did not have anything definite to measure at hand. So he had to use his own body. The length they measured in inches (thumbs), feet (feet), yards.

With the latter in general came an interesting story. It was brought into use by the English King Edgar, who ruled the foggy Albion in the years 959-975. Without further ado, this monarch decided that one yard is equal to the distance from the tip of the royal nose to the middle finger of the outstretched hand of His Royal Majesty. The will of the king is the law, so the whole country has moved to a new standard. But Edgar was immaterial, and the next monarch had other proportions. I had to change the measure of length. Why are we now talking about yards, if we were talking about how many feet are there? So they are very closely related. In one yard there are exactly 3 feet. In turn, the latter contains 12 inches.

Why exactly 12, rather than the usual 10? After all, dozens of count as much easier. Fingers at us on hands it 10, instead of twelve.

It, certainly, already absolutely other history, but too is not devoid of originality. The fact is that 10 is divided without a remainder only by 2 and 5, not including one and yourself, of course. But 12 you can divide and 2, and 3, and 4, and 6. Do you feel the difference? That's why the question of whether a foot is how many inches you can confidently answer: "12". And all these divisions and bindings were needed only for one - for international trade. If the merchants brought Chinese silk to London , they sold it in English feet. And when the English cloth was brought to Russia, they were forced to make calculations already in Russian measures of length.

A foot - this is how many arshins or even fathoms? And it is necessary to measure.

Today, in connection with globalization, almost all countries have long switched to SI. Great Britain is opposed only by Great Powers, but she also unified her favorite foot a little. How much effort did it take to draw a parallel between the metric system and the English measures of length? Many, but whether it was worth it, or it was easier to switch to SI all, the question is separate.

As a result of long disputes and numerous measurements, one international foot is now considered to be 0.3048 m. If you need to know the length of a yard, then simply multiply this number by three.

If you take the size of shoes, the foot length in one foot corresponds to approximately 45.5 Russian size and 47 European.
