Yellow Gold - Unrivaled Classic

Yellow gold - what is it? Hardly any of us knows the answer to this question. After all, this is a classic, tested for centuries, which will never go out of fashion. This metal can not be confused with any other, decorations from it are relevant at all times.
Yellow gold (photo is available in the article) is a noble metal, which is not influenced by high temperatures, moisture or air.

Properties of gold

In nature, this metal is found in the form of grains, which are interspersed in quartz, and in quartz sand. Gold has a high ductility and ductility. In its pure form, the metal is very soft, it can easily be cut with a knife. Products made of pure gold are fragile enough and tear easily. This is the only precious metal that has a natural bright yellow color. Strong shine is its characteristic feature. Gold is highly plastic, in the production of jewelry to improve physical characteristics, impurities and other metals, called ligatures, are added to it.

What is the test of gold?

The sample of gold is the ratio in the alloy of the amount of pure gold and ligature (impurity). Copper and silver are considered to be the best impurities. In our country it is customary to assign numerical values to samples from gold. This value indicates the number of parts of this metal in 1000 parts of the alloy. For example, if the product is 750 samples, it means that 1000 g of the alloy contains 750 g of pure gold.

Yellow gold of 585 tests: alloy composition

It is an alloy based on gold. Additional components (ligatures) in it are silver and copper. Yellow gold of 585 tests has the following composition: pure gold - 58.5%, other metals - 41.5%. The color of the product is affected by the number of these elements. In the countries of the former USSR, more copper was used, making the alloy a reddish shade. In Europe, they gave the advantage of silver. Therefore, the shade of European gold is rather lemon. It should also be noted that due to the composition of the ligature, yellow gold, which is produced in the territory of the former USSR, has a higher strength in comparison with the European one. The original color is yellow, but since this metal is quite soft, products made of pure gold are made only in Japan. In this country for the production of jewelry it is customary to use gold practically in its pure form. In order that precious products do not lose their original appearance, they are worn extremely rarely and carefully stored in specially designed cases. The sample does not depend on the color. The most common in our country is yellow gold of 585 tests, followed by an alloy of 750 samples. Such samples as 500, 375, 583, are very rare today.

Other jewelry alloys

  • Red gold. In the jewelry industry of the former USSR, this was the main precious metal. It was also called "Russian gold". Traditionally, this is an alloy of gold (58.3%) and copper (41.7%). Adding various proportions of palladium, silver and nickel, you can get a bright pink shade.

  • White gold is an alloy that acquires a white shade due to the addition of platinum, silver, nickel and palladium. It is used in the manufacture of jewelry with diamonds, thereby increasing the play of light and highlighting the beauty of the stones.

  • Black gold. To impart an unusual black color to jewelry, a layer of black rhodium or ruthenium is applied on them.

  • Brown gold. For the production of this shade, gold alloys of 750 and 585 samples are used, which are subjected to multiple complex chemical treatments.

  • Purple-violet gold is an intermetallide of gold with aluminum.

  • Olive gold is an intermetallide of gold with potassium.

  • Dark green gold is an intermetallide of gold with rubidium.

  • Blue gold is an intermetallide of gold with indium.

Care instructions

Yellow gold eventually loses its original appearance and begins to fade. This is because the impurities of other metals imparting strength to the product deteriorate over time and change color. In order to bring back the jewelery adornment and luxury, you can clean it.

Cleaning of gold with water, ammonia and washing powder

In a deep container, pour a glass of water, add a tablespoon of detergent and a teaspoon of ammonium hydroxide (ammonia). Stir the mixture thoroughly until the powder is completely dissolved. Decorate for two hours in the mixture, then rinse well with running water and thoroughly wipe with a soft cloth.

Cleaning of gold washing-up liquid

Place in the solution gold jewelry and put the container on a weak fire. Boil the liquid for at least 10 minutes, then rinse the products with running water and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Purification of gold with liquid soap and hydrogen peroxide

A glass of unheated water should be poured into a deep container, add hydrogen peroxide (40 ml), a teaspoonful of ammonium hydroxide and a liquid soap. For 20 minutes, the jewelry is immersed in the resulting solution, after thoroughly rinsing and wiping dry.

Cleaning the Gold with Salt
