Yaghd Terrier

Many articles have been written about the yagterriers. But almost every one of them carries a preconceived assessment, often attributing (some kind of blackening or, conversely, whitening) some qualities of the breed: exterior, character, work. To me, a person who is not interested, but who is well acquainted with the breed, I would like to cover it in a neutral light, without exaggeration. So...

Yagd terrier is a relatively young breed and, judging by its broad and unyielding standard, it is still not sufficiently formed, or polished.

German cynologists obsessed with the idea of creating a universal dog for hunting, engaged in "development" in the twenties of the last century. Actually, the German yagh terrier was to become the product of purposeful crossings of various kinds of terriers with a dark color. Light representatives in the formation of the breed did not take part. One of the main selection criteria was precisely the dark color: the white dogs allegedly frightened the game faster.

In addition, emphasis was placed on universality: the dog had to work both in the burrow (underground), and on the ground (raising game, picking up the pork), and even on the water (feed).

The starting material was four black-and-red terriers from the nursery, located near Munich. There are many versions and assumptions about their origin. Some argue that this was the fruit of the mating of chic fox-terriers, while others are talking about the "extramarital affair" of a fox-terrier fox-terrier of black and pie color with a male born of an Irish terrier and a welsh terrier. In any case, the documentary evidence is not likely to come to the surface, therefore, leaving the ancestors of the breed, we simply state the fact: The hunting hunter's club, opened in Germany in 1924, has taken up the breeding of a new breed for hunting, not disdaining close Inbreeding.

However, inbreeding knits for obvious reasons could not continue indefinitely. New, fresh blood was needed. It was decided to add blood to two more breeds: Welsh Terrier and Old English Terrier. Targeted efforts of enthusiasts gave their results: by the fortieth year it was already possible to talk about a new breed that possessed versatile qualities.

During the following years, all the main breeding material, except for single individuals, was lost. Restoration of the breed required a lot of effort and perseverance. German yaggter terrier was revived only to the eighties of the last century.

Now the breed is represented by both short-haired and short-haired dogs of three colors. And they are all recognized as the standard, exhibited in one ring and used in knits.

Yagdterrier today is a compact, versatile dog, up to 40 cm at the withers, endowed with a sharp flair, rather malicious and distrustful to strangers. This is a hunter, a companion, and a watchman in one person (or muzzle, as you please).

Yagd terrier is betrayed, pretty smart, obedient, well trained, hardy, unpretentious, with good health. Perfectly feels as in a cozy city apartment, and in a private house, with aviary content. Keep it "for yourself", as a pet, it is undesirable: the dog needs a long paddock and decent physical activity. Do not forget: the goal of breeding the breed was hunting with yagdterrier. Here, this fearless dog manifests itself to the fullest, obviously enjoying what it does.

Badger, raccoon or fox yagde terrier pulls out of the burrow itself, and then crushes prey. Some specimens "bypass" even the "experienced" Laikas on the boar tests, getting higher scores for dexterity, viscosity and boldness. By the way, a pair of husky-yagdter terrier for hunting is just perfect (knowing people will understand what they are talking about).

As for work on the water, here the German yagdterrier is usually used for search and filing. However, the time of the year should still be taken into account: despite the good immunity, this dog is still susceptible to catarrhal diseases, so it is not worth using it in this autumn and early spring.

A breed that is not suitable for the beginning dog breeder: the master of the yaggter terrier must be a solid person, confident, capable of proving his impeccable leadership without pressure and "breaking". Social adaptation and training should begin early, however, the use of hard methods is unacceptable here.
