Where is the gloxinia removed for the winter? Storing tubers of flowers at rest

Gloxinia is a very beautiful and very common indoor flower. Throughout the summer, it is in an active state, blossoms with large velvety flowers, something in the form of a bell. But with the advent of autumn, they fall off, the plant enters a phase of rest. Not everyone knows that this plant is one of the few that requires special care during the cold period. Gloxinia falls asleep for the winter, and it must be prepared for this.

In autumn the flower slows growth, leaves start to turn yellow. Buds are no longer formed. All these are signs that the plant begins to fall asleep. In this state gloxinia comes gradually. As soon as these signs have appeared, it is necessary to begin to "stack" the flower. Gloxinia for winter is removed to a dark, moist place. But before that, the leaves are cut off under the root. The optimal time for this is mid-November.

Sometimes, under certain conditions, the plant finds it difficult to hibernate independently. This happens if the age of the tuber is over three years old. In such a situation gloxinia for the winter is still removed, but before that you need to perform some actions. First it must be made to enter the stage of rest. To "deceive" the flower, they cut the watering and rearrange it in a cooler place. Top-dressing is stopped completely. Only after that the plant slows growth, yellow leaves. Then it is cut off at the root and cleaned.

Gloksinia for the winter can be transferred, for example, in the closet on the insulated loggia, some put it under the bath. It is very important that the tubers of the plant are stored in a humid place. To it there should be no access to sunlight, and the temperature is preferable not higher than 16 degrees. If the rhizome was pulled out of the ground, then it can be kept in the lower section of the refrigerator. In principle, such conditions are suitable for tubers, and they retain their viability until the spring.

So, how to keep gloxinium in the winter, so that in the spring she again gave young leaves and released more than one bud? Most often, the plant does not disturb, it is left in the same pot, where it grew. The ground should be slightly damp, but not wet. In this gloxinia will need watering. Once a month, moisten the soil, pouring into the pot no more than 100 g of water. If this is not enough, and the earth com starts to dry up, it will be necessary to increase the number of waterings to two or three. You can do much more simply: just place the pot with the tuber in a cellophane bag and tie it tightly. After that, the need for watering will disappear, and the land will remain moist.

There is another way to save the tubers. After the preparation of gloxinia for winter has been completed (the plant is brought to rest and all the leaves are cut off), it is necessary to carefully dig out the tuber. It is transferred to a pre-prepared plastic container. At its bottom is a layer of moist soil. The tuber itself is laid directly on top and is covered with earth. The container closes tightly to avoid loss of moisture. This method allows you to save space and avoid drying the tubers.
