What lubricants were popular in the USSR? The most common at that time gear oil was TAD-17I. This tool was created specifically for oblique spurs and hypoid gears. However, for some reason, TAD-17I was not suitable for use in modern CAT. Its increased viscosity and special additives did not contribute to the complete formation of the film on the working surfaces of the synchronizers.

In this connection, the angular velocity of the gears and the coupling were not balanced. Therefore, transmissions on the "nine" transmissions were switched on with a very great effort, moreover, during the switching process, a characteristic sound of jammed gears was formed. All this not only created discomfort while driving, but also significantly reduced the service life of the gearbox, which led to its accelerated breakage.

According to the state standard, substances of the TM-1 and TM-2 group were the most suitable oils for the "nine", which ensured a greater life and durability of the parts of the checkpoint. At the same time, the popular TAD-17I complied with the TM-5 standard, so it was simply not practical to use it on new transmissions, since the main pair at the G8 and N9 had not a hypoid but a helical gear.

What oil should I pour into the VAZ 2109 box? On the features of TM 5-9P

This continued until in the early 90-ies (after 10 years of mass production of "Samara") for domestic transmissions a new substance TM 5-9P was created. As shown by practice, on front-wheel drive cars this oil provided the formation of a thin film on the teeth for almost 75 thousand kilometers. However, this resource was read after the run-in of the checkpoint (before this period TM 5-9P changed once after 2-3 thousand kilometers of run).

What can you fill in the "nine" today?

With the development of the automotive market in Russia, the number of manufacturers of gear oils increases every year. What kind of oil can I pour into the "nine" box now? Specialists recommend purchasing materials for the VAZ 2109 gearbox, according to the API group GL-4. According to GOST this may be oils TM-4 and TM 5-9P. According to the characteristics of viscosity, it is better to be guided by the choice of goods with the following SAE marking:

  • 75W-90;
  • 80W-90;
  • 80W-85.

That's what oil to pour into the box of "nine" experts recommend. It is these liquids that are most suitable for VAZ 2109 and VAZ 2108 gearboxes. They have a very high resource and ensure the smooth operation of the transmission parts for several tens of thousands of kilometers.

How to replace gear oil on the "nine"?

So, first we prepare the tools. In the course of the work, we need a 10 and 17 millimeter wrenches , as well as a waste liquid container. The latter can be made from an empty can from under the antifreeze or engine oil - it's enough to just cut out one of its side parts with a knife.

Let's get to work. To begin with, it is necessary to unscrew the fastening elements of the ICE protection with a 10 mm spanner. They are under the front bumper. Next, using a screwdriver, turn off the 2 bolts of protection, which is located closer to the salon.

Now put under the car our "modernized" canister in a horizontal position and using a key for 17 mm unscrew the drain plug. Note that this part is under pressure and together with the liquid it can fall into the canister.

We wait until the old transmission oil flows out, and turn the cork back. Then put in place the protection of the engine and take from the gearbox oil dipstick. The latter is at the top of the checkpoint. To find out the oil level, it is necessary to wipe the probe with a dry rag, reinstall it and, after 2-3 seconds, pull it out again. In this case, the car should not be under a slope. Ideally, there should not be a drop of oil on the dipstick. If this is the case, then in the checkpoint, you can safely fill in a new liquid.

The amount of oil

How much oil in a box of "nine"? According to technical data, this figure is 3.0 liters for cars with a 4-speed transmission and 3.3 for cars with a 5-speed transmission.

Fill the oil with a small margin of 200-250 milliliters. In this case, the liquid level will be 4-5 millimeters above the "MAX" mark on the dipstick.

Where to put oil in the box? It should be poured into the same neck where the probe comes from. At this, the oil change in the VAZ 2109 box is completed. Everything, now you can start to operate the car again!
