What is the registration number?

The phrase "registration number" is found everywhere and is used in various spheres of life - whether it is about cars, incoming-outgoing documents or telephone numbers. A lot of objects, from engineering objects to enterprises and organizations, have their own unique registration numbers, which make it possible to identify these objects in a series of similar ones. So what does this term mean?

Registration number (or registration code) is a strictly defined sequence of symbols (most often letters and / or digits) assigned to a specific object for its identification. In a series of homogeneous objects, it serves as an analog of a name and can contain information not only about the ordinal number of an object among a multitude of the same, but also about certain characteristics. This can be a regional affiliation (for example, for car numbers) or a tax inspection code that is part of the taxpayer's tax ID. For items of technology, it can include the letter designation of the model. The information in the registration number is always encoded for brevity, so its other name is the code. Sometimes it can be just the serial number of the object (for example, the document number in the registration book), sometimes it can contain (as a barcode) a lot of information about the product, the manufacturer, etc.

In addition to the possibility of additional information, the registration number has other advantages in comparison with the name - it is usually shorter, because of the complexity of memorizing, it is more suitable for security purposes and is an exit in the case of a large number of similar objects, each of which is difficult to come up with its own name. Disadvantages of it in comparison with names and names are harder to remember and harder to pronounce.

Examples of registration numbers include automobile and telephone numbers, currency codes, CAS registration numbers of chemical compounds, series and numbers of certificates and securities, etc.

When you enter the registration number in the computer, it is easy to make a mistake due to its impersonality and often a large number of characters. To prevent such errors, there is the notion of a control number. What it is? Each number contains symbols (numbers or letters) that are control. In addition, each number contains an algorithm (formula) by which its control number is calculated. For example, the last digit of the number should be the last digit of the sum of all digits of this number. If the pattern is not respected, then an error has been made when entering the number.

With regard to legal entities and individuals registered as taxpayers, this is the main state registration number (abbreviated OGRN). So the state registration number of the record on the establishment of this legal entity is clarified in accordance with Federal Law No. 129-FZ of August 8, 2001. Assignment of the OGRN to both newly created and registered entities is conducted from 1.07. 2002 on the basis of data on his registration with the tax authorities.

OGRN is mandatory indicated in all records of the state register and the documents that serve as the basis for making such entries, as well as along with the name of the legal entity - in all its documents.

This registration number has the form of a sequence of 13 digits, the first of which is a reference to the main or other state record number or the number of the individual entrepreneur (individual). The OGRN (or the main state registration number of an individual entrepreneur) contains not 13 but 15 digits.

The second and third digits of the number are the last digits of the year in which the object is entered in the state register. The fourth and fifth - the serial number for the corresponding list for the subject of the Russian Federation, the sixth and seventh - the code number of the tax inspection, which was issued by OGRN. The next five digits - (the eighth to twelfth signs) represent the record number in the state register. The last, thirteenth digit is the control number. This is the last digit of the remainder, which is obtained by dividing by 11 all the previous twelve-digit number.

BIN as the check number has the last digit of the remainder from dividing the number from the previous 14 digits by 11 instead of 11. By the number of the entry in the register, it provides seven digits instead of five.
