What is ignorance? Values and examples of use

It seems that everyone is intuitively clear what is ignorance. However, sometimes between intuitive understanding and rational knowledge the path is not close, therefore we will help those who still doubt.

Value

The word "ignorance" is used in two meanings. Firstly, it is an intellectual lack of culture and ignorance. When a person does not know, for example, quite like Sherlock Holmes, that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Secondly, the definition of "ignorance" has a colloquial meaning - to behave impolitely, in a boorish manner, to show ill-will.

Ignorance, ignorance and ignorance

There are two paronyms - ignoramus and ignoramus. The first is a person who is obscure in matters of science, technology, literature and history, and the second is a man who is ill-bred, uncultured, and tactless. As for the question, what is ignorance? Everything is very simple: ignorance includes the semantic content of both ignoramuses and ignoramuses, so a person can be called ignorant in both senses, and this will not be a mistake.

An example of intellectual ignorance

Of course, one could say about schoolchildren who consider London the capital of France. And that would be an example of ignorance. But we will not go so easy, but turn to a more memorable case. There was such a Soviet film "Old Man Hottabych" (1957). Viewers remember the episode when the genie boasts before Volka his knowledge of geography. Perhaps, for the genie, the level of education in Hottabych is decent, but it is clearly behind and has not updated its data for a long time, speaking in modern language. Therefore Volka, who broadcast in the classroom voice of the genie, sat in a puddle. And the Soviet schoolboy even suspected of mental illness. In other words, everything ended unintelligently, and Hottabych demonstrated his complete ignorance. Although the genie himself would never admit his lack of education. And if they asked him what ignorance is, he would hardly have answered. Perhaps, he has the same archaic ideas about good manners, as well as about everything else. But let's not judge him too severely, he is a wonderful old man, though a genie.

Example of household illiteracy

With bad manners it's always easier and more difficult. In the sense that the reader will easily select the appropriate case. And it is more difficult because ill-manner, ignorance in such a cut is much more difficult to eradicate. For example, a person used to chuckle at the table and interrupt interlocutors, and what can be done with it? Yes, nothing, if he is already an adult. You can, of course, ask him if he knows what ignorance is? If it answers - well, then everything is not lost, and if not - it will be necessary to explain what to what, but there is little hope of correction. Great inertia of habit. And in general, do not expect too much from people. They are well within their own way of thinking, acting and living.

So, we disassembled the notion of "ignorance", its meaning was not so difficult.
