What does Monomakh mean? A word, a surname and known representatives of a sort

It is still unknown exactly what "Monomakh" means and how this name appeared in the list of the famous names of Byzantium and Rus. But one can not deny the great importance of the bearers of this family name for the whole of Eastern Christianity and our state as a whole.

The emergence of the surname

What does "monomah" mean? The word "Mονομάχος" is of Greek origin and is literally translated as "Divine One-Handed" or "one against God". For the first time representatives of this family became known in Byzantium in the middle of the tenth century. The origin of this genus derives from the Armenian or Greek ancestors, and the native city is considered Dalassu on the Euphrates River.
