Thyristor power regulator: principle of operation and scope

At the time of economic development, there was a need for specialized devices. The main task was to create contactless methods of commutation and their implementation in the practical conditions of the current production. This became possible with the advent of semiconductor devices in power electrical Schemes. Thyristor power regulator has become widely used both in all production areas and in everyday life. They certainly arise when working with inductance. Reverse overvoltages are practically excluded, which simplifies the very design of the device and also extends the life of the power modules.

Good recovery properties of semiconductor devices are fully involved in the operation of such devices. During short-term overloads with their subsequent removal, the thyristor is restored and continues to operate in the same mode. But overloading in such chains is an exception. In normal mode, thyristor power controllers operate with a competently matched PV. Typically, the average current delivered to the load is less than the nominal current of the power modules.

As a control system, innovative schemes are often used. Using PWM-regulator allowed to get rid of high overloads when launching powerful devices. Such power controllers are not subject to harmful influence of super-large starting currents. This also extends the life of the converters and allows monitoring of all necessary parameters in the monitoring mode.

Despite the appearance of new elements, for example, IGBT-modules, thyristor power controllers hold strong positions in all spheres. For a number of their performance characteristics, they are ahead of many innovative devices.
