The populist slogan is what?

You can often hear a word like "populist". What is that? In what context is the word used? What is the history of its origin?

general information

The word "populist" is an echo of ancient times. It came to us from Latin. Ordinary citizens in the days of the Roman Republic and the empire were called "popolos". When the authorities wanted to do something, it often required the support of commoners. In order to receive it, decisions were made aimed at their "approval".

Thus, populist politics is not the invention of today's days. It was used long before our era. And already then caution was expressed about its excessive use. Thus, many Roman philosophers condemned their people for giving up their rights and privileges in exchange for bread and spectacles, while the ruling elite plundered the country. This could be heard both in the times of the republic, and under the empire. But in the heyday of the first form of government, such accusations sounded less often. As you can see, the word "populist" is a term with a long history.

Spheres of use

The word we are using is used only in politics? No, besides this, populist decisions are made by company managers, marketers, and many other people. Of course, in this case it is impossible to row everything one size fits all. So, if you consider the option with marketers, then they act according to the rule "the buyer should have the impression that he robbed the store, although everything is the other way around." Therefore, they often use different phrases that should convince people that it is profitable for them to go to a certain commercial enterprise. But you also need to take care of the profitability of trade.

Populism in politics

But back to the main topic of the article. What is the modern term "populist"? This word can often be heard in accusatory speeches about the incompetence of public administrators. Also, this can be attributed to the promises, which are known in advance: they will not be able to fulfill them.

As an example, we can cite the situation when the head of the government of the Russian Federation promises that every citizen will receive 30,000 rubles, regardless of the level of his income. In such cases, it is said that populist slogans are used. But they can also play a useful business for citizens of a certain country. So, if the residents of the state have high intellectual development, they will be able to prevent such a policy in the elections.

Alas, considering that populism is thriving all over the planet, it can be said that before that it is still far away. And this phenomenon is peculiar not only for individuals, but for whole organizations. The best example is populist parties. What are they? What are the characteristic features of their functioning?

What is a populist party?

Their peculiarity is that they promise things that are impossible to accomplish or they are not going to do them.

Let us examine two examples. If there is a party that promises that in five years after their election all people will get immortality - this is populism in its pure form. People, of course, do not mind living forever, that's only from a technical point of view it's difficult to implement.

Now the second example. There is a hypothetical country in which corruption is the strongest one. One party says that she is ready to fight it. She is elected to power. But instead of fighting corruption, the party itself joins the "division of the money pie". In this case, they say that it is populist.
