The novel "Master and Margarita": the image of the Master and other heroes

On the pages of the novel "Master and Margarita" the author shows the moral flaws of society in the modern era and in the distant past. The main characters of the novel

The author introduces two narrative lines into the narrative: the actions take place in Moscow in the 1930s and in Yershalaim two thousand years ago. In Yershalaim, the Jewish procurator Pontius Pilate, in obedience to the will of Caesar, executes the innocent Yeshua Ha-Nozri. Subsequently, the igemon regrets his deed and is suffering for a long time. In the last chapters of the novel "The Master and Margarita" the Master's image plays an important role in the fate of Pontius Pilate: he frees him, and he regains his fortune with his beloved.

The ideological content of the book

In the Russian capital, the black magician Voland with the cat Begemot, the demon Azazello, the senior subordinate Koroviev and the witch Gella is visiting. The fatal chain of events begins at the Patriarch's Ponds. Woland talks with Michael Berlioz and Ivan Bezdom, who completely deny the existence of Jesus Christ. Satan predicts Berlioz death - it will move the tram, and in the evening there is this terrible event. Woland settles in his apartment and begins to prepare for a dark ball, and before that he holds a session of dark magic for Muscovites. Margarita signs a contract with Satan and agrees to become the queen of the celebration.

In Yershalaim, by order of Caesar, Jeshua Ha-Nozri is executed, and only the Jewish Procurator can stop this. Out of cowardice, he does not do this, for which he is condemned to eternal torment: for many thousands of moons he sits with the dog Banga and reflects on his actions, and only the Master is destined to release him at the end of the novel.

The problem of moral choice in the book

For many centuries people have committed acts against morality or in the name of it. The image of Margarita in the novel "The Master and Margarita" demonstrates the second type of deeds. This strong woman is ready to give up everything for the sake of truth and love.

Often people receive benefits for themselves through deceit, hypocrisy, violence, betrayal, lies, and then, fearing to lose them, they again go to despicable deeds. Pontius Pilate did not want to sacrifice his place and status, for which he was doomed to eternal torment.

Before him there is a dilemma: to execute, but to go against conscience, or pardon, but to lose power? The hegemon chooses the first: he is only threatening, like a lion; In fact, a cowardly hare's heart beats in him.

The Image of Pontius Pilate

The fate of the inhabitants of Rome is in the hands of the Procurator of the Jews. In one historical source it is said that Pilate is responsible for countless executions committed without trial. Such cruelty was manifested due to fear of losing its status. His associates behave in a similar way. On the pages of the Yershalaim chapters, Mikhail Bulgakov perfectly illustrates this typical characterization of the images.

"Master and Margarita" is a novel of profound philosophical content. The author proves that even the most terrible villain can become a righteous man. Pontius Pilate realizes his monstrous mistake: such an honest man as Jeshua, should not be deprived of life. Igemon comes to the conclusion about cowardice: "This is the most terrible vice." For all the positive qualities of Margarita, he rewards it - once again connects with the Master. In the novel "The Master and Margarita" the image of Woland is far from the real Satan, which for many years formed terrible legends. He looks like a man who acts conscientiously and fulfills his promises. Woland reunited Margarita with her beloved Master, punished immoral Muscovites, suggested how to free Pontius Pilate, and in the end quietly evaporated. Almighty Satan has the best of human qualities, which can not be said of the Jewish prosecutor. The author contrasts Woland and the igemon with the image of the Master and Margarita: the road to heaven is closed to them, but they are the most honest, virtuous in the novel, and above all - they remained true to each other, having passed many moral tests.
