The network adapter does not have valid IP settings: problem resolution

Ironically, many users of Windows operating systems, starting with the seventh version and higher, very often face the problem of connecting to a local network or the Internet, and the diagnostic utility provides in the results a description that "the Ethernet module does not have valid IP settings ". The situation is not catastrophic, and the problem can be eliminated by several methods that are proposed for consideration later.

The adapter does not have valid IP settings: what is the problem?

This situation can occur either when the current connection is incorrectly configured (whether Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet is used) or when there are problems with the provider.

In both cases, it will be reported that the connection does not have valid IP settings.

To check in the network connections section from the PCM menu on the selected network, select the status line, and then in the new window click the information button. Next, you should see if the IP, gateway, and DHCP and DNS server address fields are filled.

If the IP address specifies a combination other than 192.168 and then (for example, 169.254, etc.), this connection will not work, and the problem is that the protocol is configured incorrectly on the terminal itself. In the absence of values for these servers, we can assume that the problem occurred on the provider side (the DHCP server flew off).

The network does not have valid IP settings: what should I do first?

Perhaps the connection problem is temporary. Therefore, when it is reported that the Internet does not have valid IP settings, you can first disconnect from the network and then reconnect.

This is done by clicking on the connection icon in the system tray or by calling the corresponding partition with the command ncpa.cpl, where the disconnect line is selected from the context menu and then reconnected.

In the case of using a Wi-Fi network as an additional measure, you can use a full reset of the router, disconnecting it from the power supply for about 10 seconds, turning it on again and waiting for the full load.

Retrieving IP settings

However, the problem can also be in the incorrectly set up network settings. When the system reports that the adapter (or network) does not have valid IP settings, this is the most common situation.

To eliminate the failure, you can apply the tactic of retrieving IP parameters. To do this, you need to start the command console with administrator rights, and then register two commands in it, as shown in the figure below.

Then, close the console and check the connection either by trying to connect, or by the same diagnostic tool. Perhaps the message that the network module does not have valid IP settings will no longer appear.

Manual setting of parameters

But this may not help, in particular when it is set to automatically obtain IP in the settings of the current protocol. In the problem description, a link may again appear to the fact that the adapter does not have valid IP settings.

The output from this situation will be the setting of the correct values in the manual mode. To perform these operations, enter the network connections section and, using the property bar, go to the protocol setup (usually IPv4). Here it is necessary to write the IP address (the address of the router in which the last number is changed), the gateway (the value must match the address of the router in the case of the wireless network), and for the DNS servers set the values from four eights or two eights and two fours.

Resetting the network settings

In some cases, the previous operation may not be necessary. When a network connection does not have valid IP settings, you can sometimes use a reset.

In this case, you will again need to call the command line and take the following actions with the appropriate commands, as shown in the images.

After executing all commands, you can re-check the network status. Sometimes a crash without problems is eliminated in this way.

Net system load

Often in the correction of the situation with the appearance of a notice that the network module does not have acceptable IP settings, a so-called clean start of the system, that is, a download with maximum disabling of unnecessary services, can help.

To perform this download, you will need to enter the system configuration (msconfig command in the "Run" console), on the general settings tab set the active selective start line and clear the check box from the download line of auto start items.

Then, in the same section, go to the services tab, check the Microsoft services hiding line at the bottom left, and for all that remains, use the deactivate button ("Disable all") at the bottom right. As a rule, when the system is restarted (which, by the way, must be performed without fail), the problem disappears.

Antivirus, firewall, third-party programs and drivers

However, the difficulties may not end there. The fact is that some antiviruses, built-in Windows firewall and installed applications can also create connection problems.

In this case, you should first disable the anti-virus protection for a while. In addition, using the firewall.cpl command, you can open the firewall settings and activate the firewall protection shutdown lines, although this is not recommended.

Finally, you should check the list of installed programs. For example, if the user installed iTunes, the Bonjour utility is installed with it, which can also cause a lot of problems. Perhaps its complete removal and fix the crash.

In the latter case, when nothing is already working, you can try to completely uninstall the network adapter driver and reinstall it, after downloading the latest version from the manufacturer's website. To remove, use "Device Manager", and the driver can be downloaded, for example, from another computer, after which you can transfer it to your terminal by copying it to a removable media.

If this does not work, you can use Microsoft's NetShell utility, which you can download on the company's official website.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it remains to add that at least one of the proposed methods can correct the problem. It all depends on what was the root cause of the failure. But in most cases it helps to reset network settings, update IP settings or set the correct values in the protocol settings manually.

Of course, incompatible with the hardware or incorrectly installed drivers, some unnecessary applications, antiviruses (most often free Avast) and built-in protection system for Windows can also have a negative effect on the status of connections, but if everything worked before, and then stopped, in that.

The reasons did not indicate the impact of viruses, which can also lead to such failures. This is due only to the fact that each user, by default, must monitor his system himself and take a check for threats, since even the most powerful security tools are able to skip malicious codes or program modules that just appeared, and in databases Antivirus software is still lacking.
