The effect of the drug "Metronidazole" in pregnancy

The drug "Metronidazole" is the strongest remedy against the simplest organisms of the spore and non-spore forming group. To use it have started long enough, therefore preparations containing the same active substance are many. However, the remedy should be used very carefully, especially under certain circumstances and individual indications of the patient. For example, the uncontrolled use of the drug "Metronidazole" during pregnancy is dangerous. In such situations, the probability of developing pathology and even fetal death is very high. What is Metronidazole?

In pregnancy, women are contraindicated in almost all potent medicines. The manufacturer indicates that the preparation is one of the derivatives of 5-nitroimidazole. Physicians refer to it as antiprotozoal and antimicrobial agents. The influence of metronidazole on the fetus is due to its high ability to penetrate into all the fluids of the human body. However, recent studies have shown that treatment with the drug in question is still possible.

Indications for taking the drug "Metronidazole"

In pregnancy, the use of the drug is possible only in exceptional cases. For example, one of the possible indications is AMA (antibiotic-associated diarrhea). According to American researchers, in this case, the use of metronidazole is a much safer method than treatment with vancomycin. According to their data, no pathologies were found in the children of test women undergoing treatment during pregnancy. However, in Russia these recommendations have not yet been tested, and the effect of metronidazole on the fetus is still considered negative and dangerous.

Common indications for taking the drug are trichomoniasis, vaginitis, urethritis, bacterial infections caused by lamblia, trichomonads and other anaerobic microbes. Evidence also includes ulcerative gingivitis. In addition, it is used as one of the means for radiation therapy.

Contraindications for taking Metronidazole

In pregnancy and lactation, as a rule, the drug is not prescribed, since these conditions are restrictions for use. It is also not recommended that therapy should be conducted using the drug in question for patients if:

  • Leukopenia;
  • Organic brain damage;
  • Hypersensitivity;
  • Hepatic insufficiency;
  • Coordination disorders.

Individual intolerance, as well as a number of contraindications, can only be established by a physician, so only after a detailed examination and consultation with a specialist can a decision be made about the treatment with the drug Metronidazole. The description of the medicinal product allows the professional physician to take into account all possible risks and avoid negative consequences.

Side effects

Conditionally, all possible side effects are divided into systemic and local. To the system include metallic taste, dizziness, vomiting, spastic and headaches, nausea, leukocytosis, leukopenia, staining the urine in bright brown or red. Local side effects include burning of the genitals, frequent urination, vulvitis and candidiasis of the vagina. In addition, the patient may experience various allergic reactions.
