The beginning of the creative path

The Great Concert Hall named after Tchaikovsky began its existence in the first decade of the 20th century. First, several theaters were located in this building in turn. Then the room was given to V. Meyerhold and his troupe. Here were the legendary productions of this famous director and teacher: "The Inspector General", "Mystery Buff", "Woe to the Mind" and many others. In 1932, Vsevolod Emilievich moved to another building. And in the room where the PI Tchaikovsky Concert Hall is now located, a large-scale reconstruction was carried out. It was completed in 1940. The opening of the hall after the restoration coincided with the centenary of the great composer PI Tchaikovsky. For this reason, the name of Peter Ilyich was appropriated to the renewed concert stage. In the first season the hall became known to the whole Union. During the difficult military years, concert activity did not stop. Music sounded in these walls even to the sound of the sirens of air alarm. In the basement of the concert hall was a bomb shelter, where artists and spectators descended during enemy air races on Moscow. The building was practically not heated. But, despite this, the artists always performed exclusively in concert costumes.

After the end of the Second World War the hall was used for performances not only by musicians who worked in the academic field. Actors of drama, entertainers, dance groups and foreign performers began to appear on this stage. Since 1962, this hall hosts the International Competition named after Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
