To date, there are two legal ways of obtaining citizenship. It can be obtained by:

  • Foreigners who have lived in the country for more than 12 years and have a residence permit. Children of non-citizens of this country from 10 to 20 years old, who have lived and studied in Switzerland for more than 6 years.
  • Of Swiss citizens.

Nationality of Switzerland

A person who has lived in the country for more than 12 years has the legal right to file a petition, as it is possible to obtain citizenship in Switzerland on a general basis. Concerning Children, then one year of residence is counted as two.

After the petition is filed, the state authorities of the country are engaged in verification, during which they find out at the federal level the lawfulness of the citizen and check whether he poses a threat to the country's security.

The second step in the verification of the identity is the collection of information by the cantons and local authorities . Such work creates a complete characterization of the personality. At the same time, the level of integration into Swiss society, knowledge of the situation in the country and the peculiarities of living in it, fulfillment of duties in the field of taxation and the judiciary system is clarified.

After a full check, in which there were no unnecessary questions, the application for the acquisition of citizenship is submitted to the Federal Migration Service, where only state permission is given. But this is not the whole process. And as citizenship must be obtained with the permission of the local authorities - cantons and communities, then the applicant for citizenship applies to local authorities. Those, in turn, can put forward additional requirements to the rules of residence and the level of compliance with this canton and the given community. And only after the resolution of a particular canton and the affirmative response of the community can one obtain Swiss citizenship.
