Strastnoy Boulevard - part of the Boulevard Ring of Moscow

The widest (from 80 to 123 meters) part of the Boulevard Ring is the Strastnoy Boulevard, laid in 1820 on the site of the former wall of the White City.

Where is the boulevard located

His name he received in honor of the Passion Monastery, along the southeast wall of which he originally walked from Tverskaya Street to Petrovka. Now this cultural heritage site, located in the center of the capital, stretches from the Petrovsky Gates Square (it is located between Petrovka Street, Strastniy and Petrovsky Boulevards) to Pushkin Square (located in the Earthen Town between Strastnoy and Tverskoy Boulevards).

Title History

Strastnoy Boulevard, like any facility in the center of the capital, has its own interesting history. In the century before last, one half of it was occupied by the Passion Monastery (in honor of which the boulevard was named), built by Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich in 1654. The place was not chosen by chance - it was here at the gates of the White City that the Muscovites were greeted by the Passion Icon of the Mother of God, in honor of which the nunnery got its name. And the icon itself was called so, because on it, next to the face of the Virgin, there are two angels depicting the instruments of the Passion of Christ, which brought physical and spiritual suffering to Christ in the last days of his life.

Monuments of the boulevard

The Passion Boulevard was constantly reconstructed. In the XIX century, the house owner EA Naryshkina rebuilt the narrow street by her own means into the boulevard, which was called in her honor by Naryshkinsky. During the whole boulevard at different times monuments were erected, which today are 4:

  • Moved from Tverskoy Boulevard in 1950, the famous monument to Alexander Pushkin.
  • Next to the editors of the magazine "New World" is a monument to A. Tvardovsky, who for many years was the editor-in-chief of this magazine.
  • In 1999, Strastnoy Boulevard was enriched with a monument to S. V. Rakhmaninov, who in 1905-1917 lived and worked on Strastnoy Boulevard.
  • A little earlier in 1995 at the very end of the boulevard a monument to V.S. Vysotsky was erected.
