St. Petersburg - Veliky Novgorod: options for travel

Planning a trip to Veliky Novgorod from the northern capital is not so difficult, as the transport connection between the two cultural centers is developed quite well.

There are several ways to overcome the distance:

  • On the road by private car or public transport;
  • by rail.

general information

Veliky Novgorod is a small quiet town on the bank of the Volkhov River, first mentioned in the chronicles in 859 and has managed to preserve to this day many historical and architectural monuments. The main one is the Novgorod Kremlin, inside of which are the Sophia Cathedral built by Prince Vladimir, the Eternal Flame and the monument to the millennium of Russia, which has no analogues in the whole world.

But along with the oldest sights in the city there are amusing memorable places left for posterity by modern authors:

  • A schoolboy on the embankment diligently painting the Kremlin towering over the river;
  • A girl without shoes at the Alexander Nevsky Bridge ;
  • Monument to the electrician, who extended a helping hand to the kitten.

Option one - personal car

Only 167 kilometers in a straight line or 196 kilometers along the route is the length of the route St. Petersburg-Veliky Novgorod. The distance between them is overcome by the driver, depending on his experience and the traffic situation for 2.5-3 hours.

The way from Petersburg to Novgorod is quite easy to remember. Almost the entire route runs along the M10 highway, which connects the Northern Capital and Moscow. But somewhere on the 182-kilometer from St. Petersburg, near the Novgorod village of Podberezye, the main road to Pervoprestolnaya will take a little to the left, and the road to Veliky Novgorod lies straight. It will last for the last kilometers.

Option two - shuttle bus

Another affordable way to go on a trip on the route Veliky Novgorod - St. Petersburg (the distance between these cities is decent) is buying a ticket for a long-distance bus. He leaves from the St. Petersburg bus station (metro station Obvodny Canal) and should often be with intermediate stops to the station of Veliky Novgorod. From there to the Kremlin - 10-15 minutes unhurried step.

The first bus in the direction of Veliky Novgorod leaves St. Petersburg a little later than 7 hours, and the last takes up to 22 hours. The traffic interval, including passing vehicles, is 30-60 minutes. Estimated time on the road is 3.5 hours. In fact, there may be delays on the way due to unforeseen road and transport circumstances.

In the summer and weekends, do not forget about the preliminary sale of tickets, as in the season of free seats on the bus just before departure may not be.

Option three - shuttle

Another way to get from St. Petersburg to Novgorod is to use the services of a fixed-route taxi.

Among the carriers servicing flights Veliky Novgorod - St. Petersburg - Veliky Novgorod, two transport companies are known:

  • "NovgorodAvto";
  • "The Fable".

As a rule, in the northern capital they leave from the station. Metro "Moskovskaya" (from Aviation Street). You have to book in advance by phone or through the company's website.

Choosing a fixed-route taxi, on the way passengers will spend much less time, rather than they would go by bus. Distance minibus is overcome for 2.5-3 hours. But the travel time of this type of transport also depends on the situation on the road.

The fourth variant is the train-express "Swallow"

In 2013, the modern high-speed train "Swallow" was launched Veliky Novgorod - St. Petersburg - Veliky Novgorod. Travel time on the morning and evening routes is slightly different, on average takes less than 3 hours.

The price of the ticket is influenced by the time and day of departure of the express train, although on the whole it turns out to be slightly more expensive than on the bus, but it is guaranteed quietly, without traffic jams and with all conveniences:

  • Soft seats in bright removable covers, allowing to maintain cleanliness in the car;
  • Comfortable seating arrangement for groups of passengers;
  • Wide windows that open the panorama;
  • A compact climate system that allows you to enjoy the trip equally in winter and in summer;
  • Neat toilets;
  • For an additional fee - drinks and light snacks, offered by guides;
  • Good magazines.

Electric train "Swallow" Veliky Novgorod - St. Petersburg develops speed up to 45 meters per second. But still this modern train keeps a smooth course, noise inside the cabin is not observed, the braking of the composition is imperceptible for passengers, in the car no one is rocking.

Option five is a suburban train

The last way to overcome the distance between St. Petersburg and Veliky Novgorod is to take the regular suburban train. In total there are two trains. One is sent in the morning from the Moscow railway station (metro station "Ploshad Vosstaniya") and follows the destination very slowly and with all stops.

The other leaves the Vitebsk railway station of the Northern capital (metro station "Pushkinskaya"). The passenger train also follows without comfort through the town of Novolisino with all stops. Purses episodically, his schedule is better to clarify in the help desk of the station. The suburban train Veliky Novgorod - St. Petersburg is on the road for more than 4 hours.

When choosing a vehicle, you should remember the advantages of rail service in front of the bus. With a relatively equal cost of traveling, to cross the distance of St. Petersburg - Veliky Novgorod on an electric train is much more comfortable and reliable. Delays on the road on the railway are much less likely.
