Silent pistol PB: review, specifications and reviews

In the 1960s, in the midst of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and NATO, the military designers of both warring parties engaged in the creation of silent guns. The situation that developed at that time contributed to this as never before. In the Soviet Union, the possible armed confrontation with the US was taken very seriously. In the conditions of the Cold War, a special role was assigned primarily to reconnaissance and sabotage units, operating without attracting unnecessary attention, in the rear of the enemy. From Soviet designers, the creation of such weapons was required, the shooting from which would not be accompanied by loud sounds and flashes of a flame emitted from the barrel. As a result, several silent and small-sized samples were created for the Soviet special services.

One of them was the silent pistol PB 6P9. With his appearance, the problem of eliminating the sound and light accompanying during the shooting was solved. The review of the silent pistol PB is presented in this article.

History

Design work on a silent PI gun was started by the staff of TsNIItomash after the order received from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Defense Ministry in 1960. Design was carried out under the guidance of the arms designer AA Deryagin. Contrary to the persistent conviction of some small arms lovers that the Makarov pistol was used as the basis for this model, the designers borrowed only the USM and the store for the noiseless PM pistol from the PM. Despite the external resemblance to the Makarov pistol, the new model is considered a completely original small arms.

Creating a noiseless gun PB, Soviet gunsmiths developed the main principles that effectively kill the sound of a shot. In the process of research, the necessary theoretical and practical basis was created, which could be used in the future and for the manufacture of other similar systems. After successful testing tests in 1967, the silent pistol PB (GRAU 6P9 index) was officially adopted by the KGB of the USSR.

What was finalized?

In its original version, the PM trunk, according to the military leadership, was not suitable for silent shooting. It was necessary to carry out the design work. As a result, in a noiseless PB pistol, the trunk was finalized, and the weapon itself was equipped with a special PBS device, which reduces the speed of the bullet to the sound.

Device PBS

The device for noiseless shooting was a two-section silencer. Especially for the barrel expansion chamber was developed a reticulated metal roll, which absorbed the powder gases during firing. In the bottom of the hole, holes were drilled, through which the powder gases entered the expansion chamber. Its front part was attached to a removable muffler assembly by means of a dry joint.

The muffler itself was equipped with a special separator having a special design consisting of washers located at different angles relative to the axis of the barrel channel. With their help during the shooting, crushing and "swirling" of powder streams were carried out. This reduced the initial velocity of the bullet to 290 m / s. As the speed of the bullet became less than the speed of sound, a shock wave did not form during the shooting.

What is the feature of the muffler?

PBS, designed for a silent 6P9 pistol, unlike other models, consists of two parts. Thanks to this design feature, the shooter has the opportunity to use the weapon with the nozzle removed (silencer). In this form it is less bulky, which is especially convenient when carrying or storing.

When operating the PB, not equipped with a silencer, the sound of the shot is not louder than that of the Makarov pistol. In the event that a fighter needs to be fired without attracting attention, just put the muffler back on the trunk. Despite the fact that shooting with the use of attachments does not provide a complete noiselessness (metal parts hitting each other produce a distinct sound at a distance of 50 meters), the shot is much quieter.

How is the gun?

PB (6P9) uses a shock-trigger mechanism borrowed from the PM with self-cocking. On the left side of the shutter is a fuse, which, when activated, removes the trigger from the combat platoon. Since the front is a silencer, the PB has a smaller shutter than the PM. A small length of the shutter eliminates the possibility of a return spring in it. Therefore the place for her was the handle of the pistol. The spring interacts with the bolt with a long rocking lever. PB has fixed non-adjustable aiming devices. In addition, for this model, special mounts have been developed, with which the weapon can be equipped with a laser target designator and a removable optical sight. For the PB, storekeeping is provided. The cartridges are contained in a single-row magazine, in the lower part of which is a special latch.

  • The length of the PB without a silencer is 17 cm. With a silencer - 31 cm.

  • The length of the trunk is 105 mm.
  • The height of the gun is 134 mm.
  • The width is 32 mm.

  • The rate of fire is 30 rounds per minute.
  • The weapon was used by the KGB officers of the USSR. A special holster was designed for carrying a removable silencer for a silent pistol PB (6P9).

Reviews

According to the military, using this silent gun, this model has the following advantages:

  • High service strength and durability.
  • Accuracy when firing. Unlike the Makarov pistol, the PB has a large mass. His extra weight positively affects the accuracy of combat. According to the military, during the shooting, the weapon is not so much thrown up from the line of fire, which can not be said about the PM. In addition, the PB is characterized by less impact, which is especially important for high-speed shooting.
  • A silent gun has a high balance. According to some users who first took this model in hand, they had a feeling that the gun would "peck" the barrel. However, during the application, they were pleasantly surprised: PB is perfectly in the hand.

Despite the fact that this silent pistol has proved itself to be a very high-quality and reliable example of small arms, according to the military, using PB, it has the following drawbacks:

  • Presence of manually operated fuse.
  • In the gun during the shooting loudly collide metal parts
  • The weapon without a muffler mounted on the trunk is not suitable for silent application. According to users, every time you need to shoot silently to weapons, you have to mount a removable attachment.

During the operation of the PB, it was noted that in those cases where fire from the PB is performed in batches of six rounds, the sound becomes stronger. If the shooting is slow, the sound remains unchanged.

Conclusion

At one time, a noiseless Pb pistol was used in the Army Intelligence and the KGB by the special forces "Alpha" and "Vympel". Today, these small arms are equipped with special forces of the FSB and internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
