How to check the injectors on the engine and clean them yourself?

Owners of cars with injector engines must know how to check the injectors, because their high-quality work assumes the proper operation of the engine itself. Everyone can check and eliminate injectors' malfunctions, while saving money on STO.

Why do we need injectors?

The main function of this element is the supply of fuel to the combustion chambers. And you need to supply a certain amount of gasoline, mixed with air. Only in this way can a combustible mixture be formed that will ignite in the combustion chamber. Given this, it is logical to assume that the injectors can come into malfunction due to bad fuel. And this is true in 90% of cases. Car owners who pour bad gasoline into their car, are forced to clean or change this engine element more often. But for this you need to know how to check the injectors correctly.

Malfunction of injectors

If the engine is unstable, you can not unequivocally say what exactly is the cause of the malfunctioning operation. A comprehensive examination is necessary: coils, spark plugs, compression in the engine, etc.

Before checking the injectors, observe if there are any following faults:

  1. Unstable work at idle.
  2. Problems with the start.
  3. Higher fuel consumption.
  4. Loss of dynamics, power shortage during acceleration, jerking when driving.

If these problems are observed with your engine, then it's time to check the operation of the injectors. There are different ways to check the injector on the engine. Manufacturers do everything to facilitate access to the "weakest" places of the car. So there should not be problems.

How to check the injectors with a multimeter?

There is a special device for diagnosis - a multimeter. It is inexpensive and there is on any service station. It usually checks the battery, fuses and other elements of the ICE system. Instruction how to test the injectors of VAZ and other brands of cars:

  1. Open the manual and see which nozzles are used in your auto - low or high impedance. This is for accurate diagnosis.
  2. Remove the wires from the injectors.
  3. Take the multimeter and set the resistance measurement mode in it. Diagnostic wires now lead to the injectors' conclusions.
  4. Measure the resistance.
  5. The normal resistance at low impedance injectors should be 2-5 ohms. The norm on high-impedance injectors is 12-17 Ohm.

If on the multimeter you find values that do not fit in the specified range, then it means that something is wrong with the nozzles. Usually an element that does not correspond to the normal resistance is removed and replaced with a new one.

Note that the multimeter is a very useful device that any electronics engineer has. With its help, the voltage in the electronic circuits is measured, the resistance of the elements. If necessary, buy yourself a device, because in any case, it will be needed when checking many engine components.

Hearing test

Experienced drivers know how to test the injectors on a diesel engine or a gasoline engine by ear. They do not even need a multimeter. An inexperienced driver is difficult to do, but you can try. Listen carefully to what sounds come from the cylinder block. The ringing sound indicates that the nozzles are not working properly, which means that they need to be checked and cleaned. Of course, the accuracy of this method of diagnosis should not be explained. In rare cases, it is possible to accurately diagnose a malfunction by ear.

Checking the mechanical properties

To check these items you need special equipment, so it's difficult to conduct it yourself. Most car repair shops have stands for checking the stability of the injectors, and with their help you can find out which flow is generated during operation. That is, you can visually see the "torch" spraying of gasoline (diesel fuel). If the fuel is sprayed unevenly, the problems in the ICE operation are quite possible.

It should be noted that this method is the most accurate, and it is guaranteed to detect a malfunction.

Cleaning the injectors

If in the course of diagnosis it was revealed that these elements are not working properly, then they need to be cleaned. You can do it yourself without removing them from the engine.

Cleaning options:

  1. Use additives for the engine. They are poured into the fuel tank, mixed with gasoline, and when it passes through the nozzles, the additives clean them.
  2. Some experienced motorists recommend monthly cleaning with pressure. To do this, you need to accelerate the car to a speed of 120 kilometers per hour on a flat road. In this mode, you need to drive about 10 kilometers and slow down.
  3. If you can not for any reason drive at this speed, then you can do the same procedure at idle. Turnovers should be kept at the level of 4-5 thousand. Note that this method is less effective than the above.

Even if there are no problems during the engine operation, the injectors should be cleaned every 35-40 thousand kilometers for preventive purposes. Given the quality of gasoline that is bottled at many gas stations, the injectors are an element that is one of the first to require repair or replacement.

Fortunately, now you know how to test the operation of the injectors, and fix them whenever possible. But in most cases the part simply changes. These are inexpensive elements of ICE, which are inexpensive and easy to change. So if you find a problem with the operation of the injectors, you should not be particularly upset. Expensive such repairs will not do.
