Segment is part of the network

The network segment is its physically or logically separated part. This, so to speak, is the main part of global connectivity systems. In other words, a segment is a collection of nodes that use a shared shared media environment. Networks can be divided into many parts, each of which can simultaneously be a subdivision of various communication systems.

Networks are divided into physical as well as logical parts. A physical segment is a section that is separated from other parts by a bridge (switch), a repeater (hub), a router. That is, there is a division into parts with the help of additional network equipment. This makes it easier to understand the construction of the entire data transfer environment .

A logical segment is a subnet obtained by splitting a global communication system created on an IP protocol. At the same time, all of them have their own address range, set by the network mask and address, and are combined with switches and routers.

Communication devices, through which communication between segments are carried out, are repeaters and bridges. The first, passing information between parts of the network, does not analyze it. Bridges, when transmitting frames, can filter them or merge them.

When breaking networks, you can achieve several goals. If it is made taking into account the groups in which the bulk of the traffic is in the same local segment, with the allocation of the necessary different bandwidth, then the network stream will be optimized.

Another result of this division is the increase in reliability. If one segment of the network is out of order, then others can work normally.

Segmentation is also necessary to achieve security. Defining those who have access to this part, limiting the way out, implement different levels of protection.

The main thing, dividing the network into segments, it's good to think everything over so that when all these goals are achieved, keep the communication of all groups at the required level.

The process of network operation must be controlled. First, monitoring is carried out, that is, the collection of data on its functioning.

Verification of the network, as well as the analysis of the segment, consists in the processing of all information received at this stage, conclusions about possible causes of failures, requires mandatory human participation.

The technical means used for these purposes include agents of control mechanisms, expert, internal diagnostic and control systems, protocol analyzers, devices for diagnosing cable systems.

A segment is a simple logical connection. It makes it possible to simplify considerably the construction of networks with a complex topology. After all, there is no need to think through global scenarios, just set up intersegmentary connections. For each individual part, the work logic can be absolutely individual. All this greatly simplifies the process of network masters' work and allows them to create high-level hierarchical structures.
