Salvation Union - the preconditions of education and the history of development

The first secret of the organizations of the future Decembrists was the Salvation Union, organized in early December 1816. The community was originally called "The Society of True and True Sons of the Fatherland".

What contributed to the creation of this secret organization? After the return of the Russian army from foreign campaigns, many Guards officers realized that one could live better, since they had become acquainted with the European political system, with the way and level of their life. This was the impetus for the creation of the Union of Salvation. Who became the founders? As mentioned above, Guards officers, including AN Muravyov, Prince S. Trubetskoi, and the Muravyovs took the initiative. They were members of the Sacred and Semenovskaya artel. In addition to the above-mentioned persons, Pavel Pestel, Nikita Muraviev, Major Lunin and Colonel F. Glinka participated in the secret organization of the Salvation Union. The initial society numbered about 30 people. The people of the organization set themselves the following tasks:

  • Establishment of the constitutional order;
  • The abolition of the autocracy;
  • The abolition of serfdom.

However, their plans were impracticable, as the actions and their nature were not clearly defined: some offered regicide, others offered coronation to present their conditions to the new tsar. Thus, a secret organization called the Salvation Union was not yet ready for active action.

On the basis of the first society of the Decembrists two years later, in 1818, a new secret organization, the Union of Prosperity, was created. This society was at times more than the first and numbered about 200 people. The Union of Salvation and the Union of Prosperity played a big role in Russian revolutionary history. The second secret organization of the Decembrists already had its own charter and program. What was criticized by its members? First, the autocratic system of Russia; Secondly, the arbitrary rule of the landlords, serfdom and bribery; Thirdly, they reproached the authorities for the difficult life of the people. It is not surprising that they used the poetry of the young Pushkin to express their thoughts of advocating views.

The Welfare Alliance did a great job. In 1820 there were several unrest among the soldiers, subordinate to the tsarist authorities. Members of the Guards regiments, namely Semenovsky, refused to obey, and without any permission went out to the pre-nursery square. Such excitement broke out in the tsarist army for the first time, so the participants in this kind of uprising were punished as rebels cruelly.

However, the performance of the soldiers made it clear to the emperor that discontent in the army is growing, which means that changes are needed. In the same year, the organization decides to fight for republican rule in Russia. They have changed the program and tactics. These changes led to the creation of the Northern and Southern societies.

The Union of Salvation was the very first secret organization of the Decembrists. This society marked the beginning of a period of noble revolution. It was the members of the Union of Salvation who later became participants in the uprising on the Senate Square in St. Petersburg.
