Russian skier Sergei Shiryaev: biography and achievements

The Russian ski school is rich in big names, and one of them is Sergey Shiryaev. The participant of the Olympics in Vancouver passed a difficult career path, which included both successes and scandals, but he constantly proved his professional level.

Carier start

Sergei Yuryevich Shiryaev was born on February 8, 1983 and already at school he began to professionally engage in skis. In the student body, at the age of 18, a young Russian began to participate in Russian competitions, where, after accumulating two years of experience of performances, he began to regularly get into the top ten.

In 2005, he was invited to compete for the national team, and the first tournament turned out to be quite successful for Sergei - in Austria's Innsbruck, in the race for 30 km the Russian came 8th. In November of the same year in Finland, Shiryaev first climbed to the podium, winning silver at a nine-kilometer distance, and a month later became the owner of a gold medal on the Italian track in Dobbiaco, winning the race by 15 km.

International successes

But, despite his successes, a Russian for the Winter Olympic Games in Turin did not hit because of the presence of more experienced team mates. Despite the skipping of such an important start, Sergey Shiryaev set himself the goal to get to the next Olympics, for the year 2006, having climbed 7 times on a pedestal, 4 of which - with a gold medal. The next season began for the skier with two victories - in Cavalese and Davos.

In the February relay race, Shiryaev added phenomenal finish to his list of achievements. Speaking at the last stage, the backlog in more than 30 seconds did not become a problem for the Russians - at the finish line Sergei "brought" his rivals 0.7 seconds, creating a real sensation and becoming a living legend of the Russian team. However, the joy of the athlete soon overshadowed the unpleasant news from the International Ski Federation.

Doping and disqualification

In March 2007, the anti-doping company found a prohibited drug erythropoietin in the "A" sample of Sergei, which was soon confirmed by an autopsy of the second sample of the athlete. Following the meeting of the commission, Sergei Shiryaev received two years of disqualification. After the announcement of the decision, the Russian side conducted its own investigation, as a result of which it revealed the guilt of the coaches of the Russian - Anatoly Chepalov and Alexander Bazaychenko. For violation in coaching, both specialists were suspended from work with the team for several years.

An attempt to return to the elite

Sergei Shiryaev did not abandon his dream to get to the Olympics and two weeks after the end of the doping suspension was the winner of the 10 km race in the French Metabiefe. In just one year the Russian could prove that he was able to compete for medals at any level of competition and was sent by coaches to the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. However, on the main world start, the athlete could not get on the podium: taking part in two races (15 km freestyle and 50 km marathon), Sergei did not get into the relay four, leaving dreams of medals.

Despite the failure, Sergei Shiryaev said in his first interview after the Olympics that he expects to win a medal at the home tournament in Sochi in 2014. The skier immediately began to confirm his words with successes in national, continental and world championships. In 2010, after the Olympic Games, the athlete again had 7 medals, three of which - the highest test. Next year, Shiryaev spent even more productive, albeit at a lower level. More often getting only to European and Russian competitions, the skier became a prize-winner 5 times, and four times - the winner of the tournaments.

Despite the stable winning of awards, the state of the Russian began to deteriorate, and in the next two seasons Sergey Shiryaev, a skier still recently considered the favorite in any race, practically did not appear in the winners, only three times being the second, and again - the third. The trainers expected that this recession would be replaced by a successful wave of the sportsman, but in 2014 the Russian only once got into the top ten, taking 10th place in the Austrian marathon at the beginning of the season, and in 2015, taking part in two races, was Withdrawn from the team, where the experienced Shiryaev pushed the more successful young athletes. In the future, Sergei acted only in the All-Russia, as well as amateur competitions, where he was often invited as masters of international sports and invited to this day.
