Reproduction of roses (burrito method): instructions, secrets. How to plant a rose in autumn?

If you have a summer cottage or a private plot, then for sure you thought about how to decorate it. Lilies, tulips and dahlias - they all have their charm, but still can not compare with the queen of the garden - a rose. Buying ready-made roots in specialized stores is quite expensive. In addition, even if your new bush has taken root, you will surely come to mind multiplying it to share with friends, or to plant around the other corners of the garden. And this is not so difficult as it might seem at first glance. The main thing is to know well what the vegetative reproduction of roses represents in theory. The burrito method produces excellent results and does not require the horticulturist to have special knowledge and skills.

What it is

In fact, you all know well what it is, even if you first hear such a term. The burritos method is the vegetative reproduction of the bush, that is, the cuttings. However, starting a gardener does not become much easier, especially if you managed to get a rare variety or a hybrid. At the same time, the amount of starting material is very limited, and the samples themselves are extremely sensitive to environmental conditions and growing technology.

It is very good, if at that moment an experienced florist comes to the rescue, who has already performed this procedure more than once and knows how the reproduction of roses is performed. The burritos method originated in the USA and proved its highest efficiency, spreading rapidly around the world. Russia and the CIS also did not stand aside, however, we still have very few professional literature on this issue. Therefore, the sacrament of the cuttings propagation is transferred from the gardener to the gardener, and moreover not everyone wants to share the received secret. Let us with you today lift the veil of secrecy and penetrate into its essence.

The essence of the method

Here, too, everything is not easy, so first we will explain to you where this definition came from. And this applies to any cuttings, whether it's apple or gooseberry, but today we are talking about the reproduction of roses. The burrito method was named in this way by analogy with the Mexican "shawarma", that is, a traditional flat cake, into which beans, cheese and vegetables are wrapped. What is the similarity of the reproduction of shrubs and culinary art, you ask? But it is, and quite straightforward. Instead of the filling, in our case a fresh cut is taken, cut in a special way, and the moistened newspaper plays the role of a flat cake. In this way, optimal conditions are ensured, in which the stalk quite easily forms a white outgrowth, the so-called callus, in the place where the roots then appear.

If you remember a bit the school course of botany, it will become even clearer on what such reproduction of roses is based. The burrito method makes it possible to control temperature and humidity, as well as observe how the cuttings behave. This is not possible if you put them in a pot with soil in a traditional way. So, the callus mentioned above is a plant tissue, which is formed by cell division. It is this that is the basis for the formation of roots during vegetative propagation.

What material can I take for planting

Reproduction of roses by the burito method in winter is justified, as well as in other seasons. The biggest problem is to get the right planting material. Most often in the cold season in shops you can find only rooted plants in pots, intended for spring planting. In addition, in each flower shop you can find luxurious roses on a long stem, which you want to cut at once into cuttings and try to grow a new plant. We hasten to disappoint you. Cuttings obtained from such peduncles, practically never take root. Therefore do not rush to cut the donated flowers, let them better please you with their magnificent views. In addition, Dutch varieties practically do not survive in the open ground, especially in Russian climatic conditions.

Working in the garden

Autumn comes, and it's time to put your bushes in peace. High luxurious shoots will have to be bent to the ground, and if this is not possible, then cut off. Then the bush is better than winter, and in the spring it will please you with excellent flowering. Cuttings of roses in autumn in the home are carried out, even when it's warm outside, and the blossom does not end. Why is it important? Because the best plants start up when the wood is still soft. That is, you must catch the transitional state of the plant - from grassy to lignified. In the first case, the cutting is not yet ready to release the root system, and in the second time it is lost. Cuttings of roses in autumn in the home are threatened by the fact that most shoots are vigorous, with a large core. In this case, they not only take root worse, but also rot when planted.

When to wait for the result

Reproduction of garden roses can be simple and enjoyable. Do not need pots and soil, cover material and watering. And also all experiences connected with the fact that the earth will be too wet or dry will be canceled. In just a few weeks, your "roll" with stuffing from the cuttings will give quite viable shoots. This is the whole method. It would seem that everything is very simple, everyone can plant a whole pink garden on his plot. Of course, in fact we are faced with a huge number of nuances that we will try to discuss with you now.

Choose the correct stem

Well, if the neighbor shared with you the results of the autumn or spring pruning. Then you have plenty to choose from. And of course, for planting you will take only the strongest, thickest and most beautiful cuttings. Much more difficult if all available material is one branch, from which it is necessary to select at least two suitable for planting a fragment.

The length of the cuttings is usually up to 20 cm, with 3-4 buds. Equally important is the thickness and appearance. The diameter is thinner than 0.5 cm is not suitable, the branch just does not have the strength and reserve of nutrients to form roots. A thin stalk can germinate, but it happens much less often, and not the fact that the plant has enough strength to survive the first landing in the ground.

Preliminary inspection

Carefully inspect the material to be germinated. All stems should be green, smooth and shiny. On the bark there should be no black spots, damage and rot. In this case, all the others who are in close proximity will suffer. After you have rejected all the unsuitable cuttings, you can go directly to the preparation. For this:

  • Right under the kidney, having deviated 1.5 mm from it, make a cut of the future cuttings. It is done a little obliquely.
  • Remove all the lower leaves and shorten the upper ones by one third. This is important to prevent rotting and drying of the cuttings.
  • All thorns need to be cut, they often cause decay.
  • Sliced and bundled cuttings must be packed in a pre-prepared newspaper and carefully packaged. It remains only to put on top of the package and regularly moisturize them.

Would not it be better to put it in the water?

There are different ways of reproduction of roses. Some growers suggest using a different scheme, which allows you to monitor the state of the cuttings without unwrapping them. Cuttings put in cold boiled water and change it every two days. Days after 15 should form the embryo of the root in the form of a white ball. In this state it is already possible to drop it into the pot with the ground. Some people prefer to wait another week until the real roots appear. The disadvantage of this method of rooting is that the roots lack oxygen and they can begin to rot. Therefore, they come up with an alternative. On the one hand, it can be aeration system, and on the other hand - putting the planting material in a suitable soil. Cuttings of roses in the water quite willingly give roots, but excessive or insufficient temperature, abundance or lack of light can affect this process. The stalk can start to release leaves. In this case, it will lose strength and will not be able to build up the root system.

Treatment

Since it is not difficult to plant a rose in autumn, many summer residents take edging material from each other. Unfortunately, most landings are lost. Cuttings rot from the overabundance of moisture, wither without proper moistening. In addition, the future rosette sometimes lacks an additional incentive to give roots. Today in specialized departments and stores there is a large selection of growth regulators. Dipping the lower part of the planting cuttings into this powder, you increase its chances of germination.

If such drugs are currently not available, then a similar growth stimulant can be prepared by yourself. To do this, you need to take annual shoots of willow (yellow or green). They can be prepared in advance. As necessary, the raw materials are extracted and finely chopped and poured with boiling water. Literally in a few hours the solution that activates the development and growth of the cuttings will be ready.

Packing of planting stock

Let us now turn to the practice and consider how to plant a rose in autumn. Carefully examined processed samples should be properly packaged and left for germination. To do this, you need a regular newspaper or paper towel. Do not forget that this material dries quickly, so you need to fold the paper in 2-3 layers. One by one, wrapping does not make much sense, because there will be too many crocks to watch. The best option is to pack 3-4 pieces together. Reproduction of roses by cuttings in autumn has a huge advantage. Over the winter, a fairly strong plant grows on your windowsill, which will easily survive the transplant into the ground.

Conditions for germination

This is a very important point to remember. Wrapped in a newspaper, well-moistened and placed in polyethylene cuttings should be removed to a dark place. The optimum temperature is 14-18 degrees. The lower one threatens to slow down the processes of root formation, and when the roots are dried up, they dry up. This abundant wetting does not help, because it provokes the appearance of mold. Therefore, in an apartment it is difficult to establish a favorable temperature regime. Reproduction of roses by cuttings in autumn is justified from the position that at this time the heating season has not yet begun, and the cuttings have a chance to give roots under optimal conditions.

Regular inspection

Reproduction of roses by the burito method in winter is very suitable for busy people. It does not take long for you to look after your preparations, but you can immediately lay down for the germination of dozens of future bushes. After about 2.5 weeks you will be able to get the packages and carefully deploy. Assess how the process of root formation is going on, if necessary, you can give a few more weeks to complete it. Check humidity, you may need to moisten extra.

Planting of plants in the ground

As you can see, the method of reproduction of burito roses is not at all difficult. The secrets that we have discovered today can help many dacha grow their magnificent rosary. The final stage is the planting of cuttings in a jar or pots one at a time. Make sure that the upper bud rises above the surface. The pot is covered with jar and film, the air temperature at this stage should be not lower than 23-25 degrees. Spray should often, gradually opening the film as the cuttings grow.

For the most busy

If you do not have time to perform this procedure, but there are several cuttings that you need to keep until the spring, then you can leave them for hibernation right on the site. Reproduction of roses in the fall in the ground allows you to completely rid yourself of the care of future plants until the very spring. For this, a pit is dug out, a cotton cloth is laid on the bottom. Cuttings are laid on it at a distance from each other. After this, the fabric is laid on top and the earth is covered. When the soil dries in the spring, it will be necessary to remove the cuttings. On each of them will be a thick white outgrowth, with which they can be planted. While - in the pots, and closer to the autumn can be transferred to the open ground.
