Radeon 7750: characteristics, reviews, testing, review

Radeon 7750 is a rather productive video card, even by the standards of our days, in connection with which it is used today in various computers, ranging from standard working machines to medium-power gaming devices. This card was one of the most popular products in 2012 and does not lose its fans even at the moment.

General situation

Due to the fact that AMD released relatively expensive models of the 7900 series based on the use of the Tahiti graphics processor, it managed to satisfy the demands of the majority of computer enthusiasts. However, over time it was decided to release the Radeon 7770 and Radeon 7750, the price of which would be slightly lower ($ 120 for the first and 100 for the second), while the parameters were kept at the appropriate level. Both cards are based on the same GPU, which is manufactured at TSMC's production facilities using a 28-nm process, but it's worth noting that they are slightly different in terms of configuration.

Differences

In GPU Tahiti there are 4.31 billion transistors, which are located on a silicon wafer, which has an area of 365 mm 2 . At the same time, the new GPU Cape Verde has 1.5 billion transistors on the plate, which has an area of 123 mm 2 . In the most complete configuration, which was implemented in the device 7770, this graphics processor provides for the existence of ten computational units, each of which has four vector blocks. Each separate vector block includes 16 stream processors, which ultimately allowed 640 stream processors based on the Graphics Core Next architecture.

Cape Verde is distinguished by the presence of four blocks of raster operations, which is only half of what is present in Tahiti, which provides 16 raster operations in each cycle. Two controllers of 64 bits each are connected to the rasterization units using a common interface, which ultimately results in a 128-bit memory bus.

Features

The AMD Radeon 7750 used a rather interesting way to eventually get the new Cape Verde from the Tahiti processor that was used in the 7970. With only 31% of the texture and shader blocks from the flagship GPU model, as well as 66% of the cache and 50% of the rasterization blocks, this combination provides optimal performance, which was confirmed by the researches of both the manufacturer and the consumers themselves.

According to the developer, the main goal was that with the help of the new card users could get acceptable FPS parameters in Full HD resolution (1920х1080). As a result, the Radeon HD 7750 1Gb when using Full HD resolution in combination with anti-aliasing should ultimately lead to a drop in FPS, but in fact, even in modern games at medium settings, the processor used allows achieving the performance that is enough to run the majority Games.

What is this card?

AMD released the Radeon 7750, positioning it as a product that is available to the majority of modern users, and the chipset allows you to enjoy almost any modern games that support DirectX 11. In addition to this, the updated Graphics Core Next architecture allows you to more efficiently use specialized graphics adapters In order to solve a wide range of non-player tasks, including video coding or even data archiving.

The younger version of the 28-nm graphics chip model Cape Verde has traditionally received an additional prefix Pro to its name, and if you compare it with a full kernel installed in the Radeon 7770, then in this case there was a fairly large number of significant simplifications, thanks to which it was possible to provide a much smaller The cost. The graphics core in the Radeon 7750 card lost two CU-blocks out of ten installed, resulting in a decrease in the total number of texture units and stream processors. The number of ROP-blocks has been preserved - 16. The memory and GPU clock rates have decreased to 1125 (4500) and 800 MHz, respectively, while the interface was decided to be kept 128-bit.

Particular attention should be paid to the fact that the new device has 1 GB of GDDR5 memory, while its typical power consumption should not be more than 55 watts, because graphics cards based on the GPU are not equipped with connectors to provide additional power. Considering the fact that the reference design of the Radeon 7750, which was developed by AMD's designers, provides for the use of a single-slice cooler, this novelty is not only suitable for economical players, but also for those who prefer to use small performance systems of the NTRS class.

7750 or 7770?

Officially, the top card based on the Cape Verde processor is called 7770, which indicates an increased frequency of the GPU. This is quite important, since each vendor will subsequently indicate on the packages of its own 1 GHz video cards, regardless of whether they use the reference design of the board or a more productive model that differs from the original cooling system.

At the same time, the model 7750 has a huge number of differences, despite the fact that it has the same chip. The TDP 55W says that this model does not require an additional power connector, which is enough to provide a PCI-E x16 slot. Also, due to its length, the card provides for the installation in the majority of compact cases.

7750 from ASUS

At the same time, ASUS positions this model as a device slightly overclocked by the manufacturer, but the processor frequency was decided to increase in comparison with the standard only by 20 MHz, while the memory can work at an effective frequency of 4600 MHz, which only exceeds by 100 MHz Indicators recommended by the manufacturer's engineers. Since the factory frequency increase can hardly be called significant, the Radeon HD 7750 can hardly be called a top one, because such overclocking is almost invisible in the process of running real applications, but due to the fact that this model was positioned in the market as "overclocked", on It also has a higher cost.

If to speak about other specifications, then there are no serious differences in comparison with the reference sample from ASUS Radeon 7750. Special attention should be paid only to the proprietary cooling system, which makes it possible to distinguish this product favorably among a large number of similar solutions.

Set

The package includes everything needed for a budget device, that is, it includes only those accessories that are needed for the normal operation of this accelerator:

  • Disk, which contains all the necessary drivers and utilities;
  • Instruction on how to install and operate this card;
  • Standard DVI-to-VGA adapter.

This set is slightly different from what was offered in the Radeon HD 6850, but still it fully corresponds to the budget status of this device.

Additional features

In the same way as on a reference sample, a set of interfaces for outputting the required image is provided as HDMI 1.4a and DVI-I ports. Considering that an additional adapter is also provided with the video card, the user does not have any problems in order to connect a monitor, an additional plasma panel or some other projector to it.

Remembering the Radeon HD 6850, it's worth noting that the solutions based on the 7750 provide the ability to work with plasma panels or ultra-high resolution monitors, which is quite important for the majority of modern users, who have such devices more and more often. Also, do not forget that due to the use of AMD Eyefinity 2.0 technology this accelerator also allows you to connect up to six monitors, but for using more than three devices you will also need to use additional active adapters to ensure the normal output of the image.

Pay

The circuit board is executed on a black textolite, while the design and layout of the elements on it completely repeat the standards of the reference sample, which was released from the AMD pipeline. The stabilization scheme is made using the formula "2 + 1 phases" using an extremely simple PWM controller from Anpec Electronics. As mentioned above, this card is not equipped with additional power connectors, so in the load mode its power consumption is not more than 75 W.

Many often compare this model with the Radeon HD 6790. In the case of the new graphics processor, the company decided not to allow the possibility of combining several adapters in order to conduct joint graphics calculations across the CrossFireX bridge, but at the same time the support for this technology was still provided at the program level .

Design

The reference model of the card has a fairly familiar form, since a rather similar cooler and board were used in the full-size version of the HD 6770. The cooler features an extremely simple design, providing a flat single-slot radiator that only heats the GPU. For a card that has a rather modest TDP of 55 W, this is quite acceptable, but it should be noted that there are a lot of modifications of the Radeon 7750, the characteristics of which require a larger cooling system.

Pay

As mentioned above, in this case there is no additional power, and in the power system four phases are involved. The power of the GPU is controlled by a two-phase controller, which does not provide for the possibility of software voltage correction, while the video memory power is controlled by simultaneously two single-phase controllers.

The memory itself is recruited through the use of chips from HYNIX, whose nominal effective clock frequency is 5 GHz. The same chips were also used on the Radeon 7770 board.

Conclusion

Like the Radeon HD 6790, the 7750 is an entry-level solution, which for many users may well be an entry ticket to the realm of modern games. The direct competitor of this device is the GTX 650 model from GeForce, and both products pretend to take the place of the main video adapter that fully corresponds to the development of game content. But in fact for their years, both these products were too high in their characteristics in comparison with those technical requirements that were installed on the games during their release, as a result of which their relevance began to appear only in recent years.

Ultimate performance with the lowest possible TDP - this is the goal set by the AMD manufacturers before the Radeon 7750 was released. With a fairly intensive load, it reaches a power of about 55 W, and in quiet mode, the power consumption is less than 3 W, while the additional No power required. Among the cards of the 6000 series, a similar TDP is present in the 6650 and 6670 models, while NVIDIA provides a competing model in the form of the GeForce GT440, that is, obviously weaker cards. All this is achieved through the use of a progressive process technology of 28 nm.

Thus, the map to date is a very, very good solution for assembling budget computers. Most of the modern games it will be able to support at a minimum or medium level, which is already quite sufficient for many players. Of course, comparing it with the advanced devices of our days is simply meaningless, since they are created not just for maximum requirements, but also for the future.
