"Purely English Murder": actors, roles, plot
English writer Cyril Hare (Alfred Alexander Gordon Clark) lived a not very long life (1900-1958). He worked as a judge, but 10 novels brought him worldwide fame. According to the version of the sellers of detective literature, Cyril Hare is on the list of 100 best writers of this genre. Almost all of his works are screened. In England, novels are particularly popular, where the lawyer Fredi Pettigrew, whether willingly or unwillingly, becomes a detective.
Factors of popularity
The most famous, in any case in our country, thanks to the film adaptation, and an impressive title, was the novel "Purely English Murder." The actors in the picture were very popular. The actions of all the works of the English classics of detective literature are always unfolding in the midst of people whose prosperity is much higher than the average.
The charm of the world of aristocrats
In 1974, in the Soviet Union, the screen version of the novel "Purely English Murder," in which, as already noted, and that ensured the film's success, were carefully selected, collected the whole country from TV screens. The work of the An English Murder (1951) takes place in the castle of the decrepit Lord Warbeck. In the film adaptation of 1974, his role was performed splendidly by Leonid Obolensky. Boyars Obolensky roots were preexisting most of the English lords - this is so, in brackets, the actor, as they say, "in the subject."
A series of murders in a confined space
The plot of the novel is interesting because guests who arrived at Christmas to the Lord find themselves cut off from the outside world by the raging storm. Communication is disabled, and guests, to put it mildly, can not stand each other.
Main characters
So the plot is not new, but not beaten. The talented and popular Soviet director Samson Samsonov (1921-2002), who started the creative journey with the film "Jumping" and graduated with the film "A Darling Friend of Long-Forgotten Years ...", made two versions of the film in question - the film and television, shown in 1976. In the film "Purely English Murder" actors, as in all his other 19 works, the most popular are involved. The dead son of Robert was played by Georgiy Taratorkin, who was then, like Irina Muraveva (Suzanne Briggs), at the peak of popularity. The Minister of Finance of Great Britain was beautifully played by the wonderful Boris Ivanov, who often starred in Samsonov, for example, in the feature film "A lot of noise from nothing."
The main factor in the success of the film is the actors
"Purely English Murder" is a film, the actors in which played so well that even after 40 years of watching it is interesting. Perhaps, the modern viewer, who has been trained on various detectives, who have flooded the bookshelves of all countries, monologues may seem somewhat prolonged. Why is the novel and the film called "Purely English Murder"? The actors and the roles they performed in the film will not give an answer to this question, although the action takes place in England, and the artists involved in this production coped magnificently with the task - the high lights of Great Britain reliably figured.
Why these murders are purely English
The main villain - Mrs. Carstairs - played a refined beauty Eugenia Pleshkite. Her heroine killed two and poisoned herself. At the very end of the second series, Dr. Botvink calls the cause of the brutal murders and explains why these crimes are purely national in nature. Only in England there is a hereditary legislative chamber. That is, the heir of the title may be the oldest male in the family. After the murder of the venerable lords Richard (son) and Thomas (father), the title passed according to the laws of the country to Sir Julius Warback (Boris Ivanov), who was the Minister of Finance of Great Britain. It is impossible to combine work in the parliament and the government, and thus the minister's post passed to Mrs. Carstairs's husband, since he was the natural receiver. In this film, they did not kill because of a material inheritance, but because of the place in the government. And you can get there in this way only in England. She herself killed the villain because she learned about the existence of the son of Lord Robert and Susanna Briggs and the uselessness of the atrocities she committed.
English TV series with the same name
The series "Purely English Murder" (1984-2010) has nothing to do with the famous novel of Cyril Hare. He has very different reasons for that, and, judging by the number of episodes, there are many reasons. This is one of hundreds of serials about the everyday life of the police. This report on the work of human rights bodies reflects events taking place in the fictional area of London, on the eastern edge of the city, called Sun Hill.
