Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife - the founder of tourism in the Canary Islands

The city of Puerto de la Cruz, located in the north of the Spanish island of Tenerife, in the 20th century was the most popular resort in all the Canary Islands. Moreover, he was also the very first. In the 19th century, prosperous Englishmen, who dreamed of making an exotic vacation in Spain, came here to buy in the Atlantic Ocean.

Since the city is in the northern part of the island of Tenerife, it is not protected from strong winds, therefore in the winter months there is no opportunity to swim. The climate in the north of Tenerife is such that the temperature in the resort areas is always lower than in the south of the island, and in the winter months it drops to plus ten. The northern part of Tenerife accounts for 80% of the total amount of precipitation falling on the island. All this leads to one conclusion - the resort of Puerto de la Cruz can accept tourists only in the summer.

In the late 90-ies of the 20 th century, Puerto de la Cruz lost its place in the championship of the southern resort of Playa de las Americas. Now it is the most popular and developed in Tenerife.

But Puerto de la Cruz is not empty. Here come a lot of Europeans, Russians usually choose for themselves tours to Spain to other resorts.

This resort town is heavily populated by local residents, in one heap interspersed with residential buildings, hotels and tourist complexes. The resort offers a wide variety of different from each other in terms of service hotels, hostels and large hotel complexes.

Entertainment for tourists here, too, abound, bars, cafes, restaurants, casinos, nightclubs and other institutions do not let visitors get bored. Very interesting and memorable will be a visit to the botanical garden, created here in the late 18th century. In addition to it, tourists like to look at a unique collection of penguins, parrots that you will not meet in the wild, a collection of orchids in the famous Loro Park. There is also a colorful show of dolphins, sea lions and killer whales. This tourist complex, which combines a botanical garden, a large aquarium, a dolphinarium and a zoo, is very close to Puerto de la Cruz. To visit this place is really worth it, for good reason, even from the south, tourists go north specifically to see this colorful spectacle.

On the coastline of Puerto de la Cruz, there are several beaches with black volcanic sand, but they are not so popular with tourists as swimming pools with sea water in the eastern part of the city. In the pools, water is much warmer than in the Atlantic Ocean. Therefore, almost all couples with children, the elderly and young people who do not risk freezing, prefer swimming pools to the cold ocean.

Rest in Spain at the resort of Puerto de la Cruz takes a very unusual color. Thanks to its rich and long history, the city has become something middle between an old attractive town with a fishing port and a modern tourist center. Colorful houses and ancient streets in one area are replaced by modern buildings and hotels in another.

If it were not for the peculiarities of the climate in the northern part of Tenerife, this resort would undoubtedly remain the most popular and interesting on the island, and Russian-speaking tourists would often go on tours to Spain on Puerto de la Cruz.
