'Potassium iodide'. Description

"Iodide potassium" - a drug that affects the synthetic functions of the thyroid (affects the formation of hormones). It inhibits the synthesis of the thyroid-stimulating hormone formed under the influence of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland (by means of which the functional capacity of the thyroid gland is regulated), in addition there is a reflex increase in the secretion of the bronchial glands (sputum is intensified). Also, "Potassium iodide" has the properties of protein cleavage (proteolytic activity). When applying the drug, antiseptic properties are localized. One of the most important properties of "Potassium iodide" is the ability of the drug to bind radioactive iodine, preventing its accumulation in the tissues of the thyroid gland, providing protection of the body from the effects of radiation.

Indications for use of the drug

"Potassium iodide" is used for hyperthyroidism, endemic goiter (the disease develops in the case of a lack of iodine in water), when preparing patients for thyroid surgery for thyrotoxicosis (the disease is characterized by increased secretion of thyroid hormones). In other cases, "Potassium iodide" is used as a medicine for diseases of the respiratory system, in cases of bronchial asthma. Good results "Potassium iodide" demonstrates in the treatment of eye diseases (cataracts, hemorrhages in the shell of the eye) and with lesions of the conjunctiva and the cornea with a fungus. In some cases, "Potassium iodide" can be used as an auxiliary for the treatment of syphilis or for preventive measures to protect the thyroid gland from radiation.
