Pahistahis yellow - live candles on the table

The name of the genus pahistahis, which includes 7 species of perennial shrubs and herbaceous plants, comes from the Greek language and means "thick spike". The plant belongs to the acanthus family and is from Peru. In Russia, shrubs have been known for more than ten years. For indoor growth, pahistahis yellow is best suited.

This is a vertically growing bush with thin, pointed at the ends of bright green opposite leaves. Their size varies from 10 to 15 cm, leaves are slightly rough and wrinkled, they clearly stand out streaks. In summer at the ends of the shoots, inflorescences of spicate form appear, the length of which reaches 12 cm. They consist of decorative bracelets or bracts of bright yellow color, which, like tiles, fit tightly and are arranged in four vertical rows. From under the scales of the lower part of the spikelets, white tubular curved flowers of a five-centimeter length are shown with a three-bladed bend.

The flower pahistahis keeps in the inflorescence for no more than 3 days, then departs, and the next one blossoms after it. After the yellow ear sprouts, he decorates the plant for a while, and then disappears.

With good lighting, the flowering period starts in February and ends in October, which is a good result for a modest house plant. In addition to the yellow species, bright red with large inflorescences of the corresponding color is grown, however, this species is rarely found.

Pachistahis: care

The plant is simply cultivated. Good lighting is required for the pahistahis during the year. To do this, put the pot in a bright, well ventilated room, best on the windowsill. In summer, the bush perfectly develops on the balcony, located on the east or west side. In winter the best place will be the southern window.

Transportable summer temperatures from 12 degrees, but it is recommended to grow at 17-25oC. Lowering the temperature to plus 10o C causes the fall of the foliage with abundant watering.

The plant should be regularly sprinkled with warm boiling water, and care should be taken so that the liquid does not fall on the flowers.

The land in which the pachistahis yellow grows must have a moderately moist environment throughout the year. In summer, in the heat, so that the plant is not withered, you should increase watering. With a lack of moisture, the flower lowers the leaves. If a prolonged time there is waterlogging or drought, the plant may lose its decorative appearance and even die.

As a soil, a ground mixture is used from sheet earth, to which sand, peat, compost and garden soil are added. In the substrate it is recommended to put bone meal together with charcoal.

Transplant pahistahis yellow every year - from February to May, after the pruning is done. If the plant does not bloom, the transplant can be performed in the summer.

Reproduction is made by cuttings, which remain after cutting with shortening of long shoots. They must be rooted in water at room temperature (not lower than 20 ° C). After transplanting into the ground and beginning the growth of the flower, its apex should be pinched to accelerate branching.

The bush needs to be fed, which is produced every two weeks, using a solution of complex fertilizers for ornamental plants. It is recommended to increase the dose specified in the instructions for use, twice.

The main problem of growing is a lack of light, because of which pahistahis yellow loses its foliage and ceases to bloom.

To form a lush branched bush plant in early spring and after it has finished blooming, it is necessary to cut and pinch. In pots of large diameter, you can simultaneously plant several cuttings.
