Ondulin: what is it and what is it used for?

Often when selecting building materials, you can find such names that do not carry an informative hue, such as onduline. What this is and why it is needed, we will consider in the article.

What is it ondulin?

This building material was developed in France by the company "Ondulin". What it is, you can understand, if you give a more detailed description. Ondulin is a blade like slate made of such components as bitumen distilled, cellulose fiber, mineral fillers and resin. The production of this roofing material is based on the use of the latest technologies, while the webs are treated with bituminous composition in two stages, after which they are painted with acrylic paints. Advantages of ondulin can be described as its characteristics:

  • Light weight;
  • Resistance to the influence of various influences (moisture, chemical reagents, ultraviolet rays, oil products and others);
  • Ecological compatibility;
  • Resistance to reproduction of mold and fungus;
  • Low cost and ease of installation.

Ondulin (what it is, was discussed above) is conditionally divided into the types:

  • Matte canvas, which differs rough surface. The disadvantage of this species is the accumulation of small debris and dust.
  • The glossy sheet has a smooth and bright surface. One of the negative properties of this coating is smoothness, because of which the snow from the roof comes off layers, so it is recommended the installation of special tools. Also, flammability and fading in the sun can be called flaws in this roofing raw material.

Installation of ondulin

Roof material onduline is easy to assemble. The order of work consists of the following stages:

  1. Execution of the crate. For this purpose it is recommended to use beams measuring 40 x 60 mm. The step between them depends on the slope of the roof: at an angle of 10-15 °, a value of not more than 45 cm is used, and with a slope of more than 15 ° it is applied to 61 cm. The bars are fastened with self-tapping screws of about 8 cm.
  2. Stacking layout. You can use a pencil and a centimeter tape. To fit the sheets, a hacksaw is used and the cuts are lubricated with oil in order to avoid a jamming of the blade.
  3. How to stack ondulin? These works are recommended to be carried out, starting from the undisposed side. At the angular joint, it is better to create an overlap of not more than 3 sheets. For this, the second row starts with a web cut into two longitudinal parts.
  4. Fastening of the material is carried out with the help of nails (20 pieces per sheet).
  5. Execution of the ridge element, thorn, apron and other additional devices. These parts can be purchased complete with roofing material.
  6. Places of connection with the valley, cornice, etc. can be covered with a special tape, which will create additional waterproofing.

Ondulin (what it is, we already understood) has excellent qualities, its use as a roofing is widespread. This is explained not only by the affordable price, but also by the long service life, ease of installation and other properties.
