Neurogenic bladder: causes, symptoms and treatments

Under the term "neurogenic bladder" in medicine, it is accepted to understand several disorders of the urinary system. But in each case this is due, first of all, to a malfunction in the system of nervous regulation.

Neurogenic bladder - what is it?

The bladder is an organ with a complex structure and very important functions. He accumulates and, as necessary, removes urine from the body. All these processes are controlled, first of all, by the nervous system, both peripheral and central.

A neurogenic bladder is a disorder of the nervous innervation. The organ loses its natural functions as a result of damage to the nervous system. For example, it may lose its ability to contract and, accordingly, the conscious excretion of urine from the body is disturbed. Or, on the contrary, it can shrink too often, causing imperative urges. In any case, NMP can not be considered an independent disease. Most often this is just a symptom of damage to the nervous system.

Neurogenic bladder is common in children. Although cases of illness among the adult population of the planet are also not considered a rarity.

Neurogenic bladder: the main causes

As mentioned above, such a violation is the result of the defeat of the nervous system. But in medicine it is accepted to distinguish several basic factors:

  • NMP can be the result of some birth defects in the anatomical structure of the peripheral nerves, spinal cord or spine.
  • Also, the failure of the bladder can be caused by injuries to both the brain and spinal cord. For example, this symptom may appear after rupture, destruction, or severe compression of the nerve tissue. Often the cause is cerebral hemorrhage. Sometimes NRM develops after surgical procedures on the pelvic organs, in case peripheral nerves were touched.
  • In addition, a similar syndrome can occur in the presence of degenerative or inflammatory processes in the nervous system, including encephalitis, alcohol and diabetic neuropathies, as well as tumors of the brain and spinal cord.

In any case, you need to see a doctor as soon as possible.

Neurogenic bladder: the main symptoms and course of the disease

The disease can occur in different ways. In some cases, a person complains of constant urges, as the bubble begins to contract too often and strongly. Other patients have a different problem - they do not feel filling the bladder and do not feel the urge to urinate.

Naturally, the syndrome of a neurogenic bladder can proceed according to different schemes. Sometimes the sphincter of the bladder is not coordinated by the work of the nervous system. In this case, urine does not accumulate in the bladder, but constantly leaves the body in small portions. The patient thus does not feel natural urge and is not able to control the act of urination.

In other cases, the sphincter, on the contrary, is always tense. As you fill the volume of the bladder increases significantly, but the nervous system does not react to it - the person does not feel the desire to empty. The accumulated urine can enter the ureters and even back into the kidneys, which creates a huge risk for their condition.

Neurogenic bladder: treatment and diagnostic methods

Diagnosis of such a violation - the process is rather complicated, requires the attention of an experienced specialist. Naturally, when making a diagnosis, the results of blood and urine tests are used. But also conduct ultrasound, radiography, pyelography, urography and other tests.

As for treatment, it is necessary to first determine the primary disease - after eliminating the underlying cause of the symptoms of the neurogenic bladder, usually pass. Quite often, patients simply need a catheterization of the bladder to restore the outflow of fluid. Sometimes tissues are treated with antiseptic agents and antibiotics, as a constant accumulation of urine creates excellent conditions for the development of pathogenic microorganisms.
