Naval cemetery in Vladivostok: ancient history and modernity

There are ancient cemeteries in many large cities of our country. Most often, these are memorial territories where mass graves have not been carried out for a long time. And it is only in rare cases that the places in which people are buried for more than a century remain fully operational. This category includes the Sea Cemetery in Vladivostok. It is one of the oldest in the city, it is also buried today.

Historical reference

The official date of the founding of the cemetery in Pervomaisky district of Vladivostok is 1905. It was called when it was discovered by the Bratsk Sea Cemetery, at first it was buried by sailors and servicemen killed in battles. At that time the whole territory was divided into two sections: garrison and naval, and it was very easy to find the required burial. According to some reports, the first graves in place of the modern Marine cemetery appeared in 1902. At that time, on a new "unprestige" cemetery ground, employees of lower ranks were buried, as well as officers who died as a result of accidents and suicides. Adjustments to the development was made by the Russo-Japanese War, at which time the first mass graves and memorial burials appeared on the Sea.

Temple in the Sea Cemetery

Three years after the official opening of the cemetery, the "Temple-monument to the sailors, on the sea drowned and killed" was erected. The author of the project was engineer Andrey Isanov. Archbishop Eusebius consecrated the church in the name of the icon of the icon of the Mother of God "All the Sorrowful Joys". The sea cemetery was originally organized as a military cemetery, but already in 1912 it was officially allowed to carry out civil graves. Very soon a female monastic community of Odigitria Smolenskaya was organized at the temple. The sisters lived right on the cemetery territory, in a specially built house, looked after the graves and sang the burial service of the deceased. In 1928, the Marine Cemetery was transferred to the municipal department of municipal services. At the same time, the monastic community was disbanded, the temple building and the community house were used for some time for household needs.

List of famous burials and historical monuments

During the construction of the temple near him, a memorial site was organized for the most honorable burial places. Here, the ashes of the lower ranks of the legendary cruiser Varyag, brought from Korea, were reburied. Nearby are the mass graves of the sailors of the ships "Tiksi", "Bolsheretsk", "Tavrichanka".
