Myoma - what is it? Causes, symptoms and methods of treatment of a tumor

Myoma is a common problem in the female population. According to statistics, this disease affects mainly women aged 35 to 45 years, with a high percentage of patients in this age group (about 40%). That is why we are interested in questions about why a myoma occurs, what it is and what signs are characteristic of it. The sooner therapy is started, the sooner the recovery will come.

Myoma - what is it?

Myoma is called a benign tumor. It is formed in the muscular layer of the uterus, most often from atypical connective tissue cells. Physicians identify three main types of these tumors, depending on their location:

  • Interstitial myoma - it is located in the thickness of the muscular wall of the uterus;
  • Submucous tumor - is displaced inward and, as it grows, protrudes into the uterine cavity, deforming it;
  • The sub-serous neoplasm develops under the peritoneum.

The main causes of myoma formation

In fact, there are several risk factors, under the influence of which the myoma can form. The causes are most often associated with hormonal disorders (usually women are ill during the menopause, which is characterized by the instability of the hormonal background). And, of course, heredity is of great importance.

The mechanical effects on uterine tissue, including curettage and abortion, increase the risk of tumor formation. On the other hand, do not ignore the general condition of the patient's body, because obesity, diabetes, hypertension, various endocrine system diseases can also lead to the development of fibroids.

Recent studies have also shown that in women over 25 years of age, leading an irregular sex life, myoma is diagnosed much more often.

What symptoms are accompanied by the growth of fibroids?

Having found out why the myoma develops, what it is and what its features are, it is worth familiarizing yourself with its main signs. Most often, the initial stages are asymptomatic - the tumor is detected during planned visits to the gynecologist.

But as the growth grows, there are irregularities in the menstrual cycle. Quite often, menstruation is accompanied by too abundant secretions. Metrorrhagia are also observed - bleeding, which is not associated with menstruation. Constant loss of blood leads to the development of iron deficiency anemia, which, in turn, is accompanied by weakness, pale skin, chronic fatigue, dizziness.

In the future there are pains in the lower abdomen. If the tumor grows under the peritoneum, there may be disruption of the work of neighboring organs, in particular, excretory and digestive systems. Women with fibroid enlargement often complain of constipation and bladder problems.

It should be noted that myoma often causes infertility and spontaneous termination of pregnancy. That is why with such complaints it is better to immediately apply to a gynecologist.

Myoma: treatment and diagnosis

As already mentioned, the tumor can be detected during a gynecological examination. In the future, additional studies, including ultrasound, and sometimes biopsy. Only a doctor can intelligently explain why there is fibroids, what it is and how to choose a truly effective treatment regimen. At the initial stages, hormonal treatment is enough - women are prescribed androgen preparations and some hormonal contraceptives. Conservative therapy helps to slow the growth of the tumor. But if the myoma rapidly increases in size and causes frequent and profuse bleeding, surgical intervention is necessary.
