Mount Sugarloaf - a tourist attraction in Brazil

Of all the places in the world that can surprise tourists, the Sugar Loaf Mountain occupies one of the leading positions on the list. The area where it is located is so picturesque that it is incredibly difficult to convey all the beauty of the words. Why this is the name of the mountain, no one knows for certain. From working versions, you can distinguish two:

  • From afar, the outline of the elevation resembles a form in which sugar was shed in ancient times.
  • The name of the rock was given by local tribes, and its original name came to us through the centuries.

The country in which Sugarloaf Mountain is located is Brazil. The rock is located near the most beautiful and famous in these places the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is located in the part of the peninsula where the bay of Guanabara separates the land from the Atlantic Ocean.

A bit of history

Historians have reliable information that in 1565 at the foot of several settlements of the Portuguese appeared, which united in a tiny village. This village in the future was destined to turn into a modern city, one of the best and most beautiful in the country - Rio de Janeiro. Henrietta Carstairs was the first who officially conquered the peak of the rock in 1817 and hoisted the flag of England on it .

In the first decade of the twentieth century, the government began to build a cable car, which, despite its considerable age, is still working well, bringing considerable financial revenues to the state treasury. Among the local population, the combination of the concepts "Sugar Loaf Mountain - Rio" are inseparable. This is almost one whole. Since ancient times it was believed that the rock is a symbol of protection and guard of the city.

Cable car

Modern equipment, which had to be installed in place of the old one, opens up new opportunities for a survey of landscape beauties from a height of 400 m. The road is capable of serving 72 passengers per flight. Despite the fact that the age of the funicular is solid (more than a hundred years), for the entire period of its existence there have never been any emergency situations on it.

Local residents have taken care of the variety of recreation for tourists. At the top of the mountain you can climb the route that connects Moro da Urca and Praia Vermella. As the historical facts say, this mechanism was unique in its own way at the time of its creation (1912). In the country it was the first cable car, and in the world the third.

An interesting fact: the Sugarloaf mountain is one of the most visited places in Brazil, and the funicular has to serve up to 30 million travelers a year. The most surprising thing is that as specialists who monitor the condition of the cable car, it is possible to do scheduled repairs with such influx of tourists.

How to get on the tour

Once in Rio de Janeiro, the first place to go to a traveler is the Sugar Loaf Mountain. How to reach this miracle of nature, anyone will tell: from small to large. The rock is the pride of the locals and, moreover, brings considerable financial contributions to the budget. Getting to the mountain from the central square of the city is very simple. Tourist buses run to the peninsula. In order not to confuse route numbers, it is best to immediately remember it or write it down. For people living in different parts of the city, the easiest way to get to the center is by taxi, from the central square you can get to the foot of the rock by a tourist bus in half an hour.

Cost of excursion

In Brazil, there is something to see: The Statue of Jesus Christ, the famous Niteroi Bridge, the Sugar Loaf Mountain. Rio de Janeiro is rich in beautiful and unique places, so tourists here will not be bored. From a geological point of view, a quartz-shaped rock can not be called a mountain. The sugar head is a monolith that arose during the formation of the earth's crust. His location, most likely, a number of lucky coincidence. From this hill there is a beautiful panoramic view of the city, the ocean and the peninsula, and there really is something to see here.

Mountain Sugar head in height is 396 m. You can climb this elevation by cable car. For kids up to six years, a funicular ride is free. Older children will have to pay for the tour USD 26, but for adults it will cost twice as much. Tickets are sold in special ticket offices in the central square of the city and at the foot of the mountain, however, the queue will have to survive rather big.

What else can you see in Rio de Janeiro

Millions of travelers annually come to Brazil, and during the carnival season the number of tourists increases several times. Crowds of onlookers from different countries are simply dumbfounded by the action that takes place on the streets of the city. The best place to view Rio is the Sugar Loaf Mountain, or rather, the plastic transparent cabs, which slowly rise upward, and then as slowly fall.

But there are other places in the funicular route:

  • PraiaVermelha, or Red Beach. Actually, this is a translation of the name of a small town, next to which is a beach for tourists. The species that open from the bird's flight height are simply amazing. Before the tourist there are landscapes: incredible whiteness beach sand and the blue of the ocean. This can only be seen from the cover of the famous glossy publications.
  • Mount Urka (220 m). Although the elevation is inferior in height to the Sugar Loaf, however, there is nothing to see. Landscapes will leave in memory an indelible impression for the rest of your life. It was here that the amphitheater was set up, where various entertaining shows are arranged, preparations for carnivals are held, dancing programs are shown.
